Posh camping in Brittany at 34-36 weeks?

It will be the first 2 weeks of the DDs school holidays, hence the lateness of the trip.

The travel would be 1.5 hours drive to ferry, 6 hours ferry, 1.5 hours drive to campsite from ferry.

Eurocamp style tent with proper beds, large site with loads of activities/clubs/pools for DDs.

We could alternatively stay in the UK, but it will be almost as pricey (which is definitely a consideration) or go on a cheapy Majorca or similar holiday a couple of weeks earlier (meaning DDs would miss school).

Help!

i'd say you were bonkers lol, but i went to the rockies at 38 weeks. only 4 1/2 hours drive though and no camping involved, posh or otherwise.

you'd need a fit to fly after 32 weeks for most airlines.

madwomanintheattic · 13/03/2009 19:23

take your bag and a baby car seat

and insurance.

bratnav · 13/03/2009 19:25

We could have a mobile home thingy instead, which is minimally more expensive. I looked at att the tour operators rules on PG flying, the general rule seems to be after 28 weeks you need a doctors note, after 34 weeks there is no chance.

I am NOT having this baby in France, I am having a lovely stress free home birth. Apparently there is either epidural or nowt in France

Check whether the ferry company will let you travel.
Check whether you (and the baby if it arrives aerly) would be covered by travel insurance.

I suspect the answer to both may be No.

ChippyMinton · 13/03/2009 19:33

And don't go in a tent, because it will be PITA going for a wee in the night.

DaisyMooSteiner · 13/03/2009 19:39

TBH I would stay in this country, if nothing else because what would happen if you needed to access antenatal care while you were away eg if the baby stopped moving, you suddenly had symptoms of pre-eclampsia/dvt, thought your waters might have gone etc etc? In this country it wouldn't be a problem to pop into your local delivery unit for a check, but in another country I think it would be a total nightmare trying to find a hospital, sorting out insurance, language and so on.

ChippyMinton · 13/03/2009 19:51

Remember this case?

I'm pretty sure the ferry company will have issues with you traveling that late in your pregnancy. I live in Channel Islands and wasn't even allowed to take the inter-island ferry after 34 weeks (it only takes an hour fgs!). Stay in the UK ... am feeling sick for you at thought of so much driving...!

bratnav · 15/03/2009 11:38

Bloody hell Chippy, thanks for that though, OK,Caornwall here we come I was looking forward to some heat and rest before DC4 arrived Maybe it will be a good summer here...

Sorry to put a dampner on your plans, but I remember it created a big stir at the time. Hope you can find something restful in the UK. Could you go away at May half-term instead?

bratnav · 15/03/2009 17:36

Can't as DSD is away with her Mum then, otherwise we would have done that

bugger, 32 weeks is their cut-off anyway. I should have thought of that.

Easter?

bratnav · 15/03/2009 17:54

Couldn't get the cash together that quickly

(I do appreciate that you are trying to help btw, promise I am not being difficult)

Certainly Brittany Ferries don't let you travel after 28 weeks, I'm sure the others are similar. Having had a baby in England & one in France, I would not chose to have another one in France if I had the choice!

bratnav · 15/03/2009 18:59

I think this might constitute a genuine reason for going on holiday in school term time. I would never normally do it, but DH and I have promised ourselves a holiday abroad before the baby arrives, as we have never done so together.

You do sound like you could do with a holiday.

I am contemplating an AIBU thread, but not sure if I have the strength
