Pregnant - had cancer

Hi - first post!
My wife had a mastectomy 4 years ago (no treatment needed after) and is healthy now. She is 10 weeks pregnant, and I was wondering if any of you more experienced parents out there have had a similar experience. Is there anything in particular (or anything at all!) my wife should be careful with or that is different for mothers-to-be who have had cancer?
Thanks,
David

Hi David, congratulations on your wife's pregnancy! Can't help with your question but bumping for you, someone here must know more about it.

Hi, and welcome to MN. Your wife really needs to speak to her oncology team to get advice on her care during and after pregnancy - if she gives her consultants secretary a call, they can make an appointment to discuss things.

Thanks for your advice - and the bump! - I will get her to contact the consultant. I asked the midwife at the hospital about it and she said that my wife might not have enough milk for the baby - but if that's the worst problem we face then I will be happy.
David

She should ddefinately get advice from the Breastfeeding section regarding breastfeeding. If it is possible to feed twins with 2 breasts (which it is) then it is more than possible to feed one baby with a single breast.

She should contact her oncology team though. Some types of breast cancer respond to increased levels of Oestrogen - so she might want to discuss this with her consultant. If there is no current tumour I can't see why there would any concerns, and if there was I would have thought that the issues of conception would have been discussed whilst she was being treated - but worth checking.

As long as she didnt have chemotherapy it shouldnt be a problem but she should def let oncology team know esp if bc was hormone positive.
