Pregnant - had cancer

Hi - first post!
My wife had a mastectomy 4 years ago (no treatment needed after) and is healthy now. She is 10 weeks pregnant, and I was wondering if any of you more experienced parents out there have had a similar experience. Is there anything in particular (or anything at all!) my wife should be careful with or that is different for mothers-to-be who have had cancer?

Hi, and welcome to MN. Your wife really needs to speak to her oncology team to get advice on her care during and after pregnancy - if she gives her consultants secretary a call, they can make an appointment to discuss things.

Thanks for your advice - and the bump! - I will get her to contact the consultant. I asked the midwife at the hospital about it and she said that my wife might not have enough milk for the baby - but if that's the worst problem we face then I will be happy.

She should ddefinately get advice from the Breastfeeding section regarding breastfeeding. If it is possible to feed twins with 2 breasts (which it is) then it is more than possible to feed one baby with a single breast.

She should contact her oncology team though. Some types of breast cancer respond to increased levels of Oestrogen - so she might want to discuss this with her consultant. If there is no current tumour I can't see why there would any concerns, and if there was I would have thought that the issues of conception would have been discussed whilst she was being treated - but worth checking.

As long as she didnt have chemotherapy it shouldnt be a problem but she should def let oncology team know esp if bc was hormone positive.
