Sore buttock - what is causing it?

I have developed a sore right buttock and have no idea what is causing it. A few days ago it was my left buttock! I know there is something which can affect your pelvis called SPD (or is that PSD?) but I don't think it is anything like that, but I have no idea what it is. I have assumed it is posture-related causing bottom strain but am just guessing really. Does anybody have any idea what it is and whether it is something I can prevent?

Thanks in advance for any responses!

PS I am 33-34 weeks (I think!) with number 4. All previous pregnancies were completely uneventful* so things like this are alien to me.

  • I also have developed spider veins and I think a varicose vein in my left leg which is distressing me, but that is another story!

Hi, It may be pelvic girdle pain, I got core exercises to try, and told pelvic floor exercises help too. Is it really painful when lying down? Or from going from sitting to standing?

MoshiMoshi · 11/03/2009 13:08

No, there is no problem when lying down, only when moving around!

I sometimes get a pain in my right buttock too - I think it could be the sciatic nerve maybe?

MoshiMoshi · 11/03/2009 13:29

MsG - ooer, does sciatic pain mean something is trapped?

Sciatica.
I have it too - mine's in the form of an ache at the base of my spine and then a shooting pain across my left buttock through my hip. Sometimes it radiates down through your leg. It's caused by your uterus putting pressure on your sciatic nerve. Apparently you can do stretching for it - I'm only 20 weeks and havne't really given it a try as it's bearable at the moment and comes and goes.

Hope you feel better!

is it a muscle pain like you'd get the day after you went at it too hard in the gym?

I had that, but after pregnancy and delivery and it was linked to my pelvis/sacro-illiac joint being out of whack. however mine didn't move from side to side...

if it is this core style pilates exercises are the best help I have found, if it continues after pregnancy make sure you get to decent physio/osteo asap - mine was misdiagnosed as sciatica and nothing was done for two years, I now have it for life and if I dn't do pilates am in agony

MsG · 11/03/2009 13:52

I'm quite lucky in that mine comes and goes too and isn't too bad. Not sure if it is sciatica with me to be honest but I don't know what else it would be. It's more linked to backache than my legs.

Found this useful link on pregnancy pains!

Note the bit about "Later in the term when the abdomen enlarges and lowers, the Gluteal and posterior leg muscles begin to overwork helping the erector spinae keep the body erect. The deep rotator muscles in the buttock also work hard and rotate the legs and feet outward to produce the infamous "waddle" technique in walking" which is described me just about. It also explains why it happens to both buttocks at different times!

I might call them and also see if anybody else has a recommendation for an osteo in West London where I live...

Thanks for the link! I'm going to keep an eye on my buttock (!) for the time being and if it gets worse, see someone. x

dinny · 11/03/2009 14:44

it's sciatica - I always get this in pregnancy (left buttock though)

see an osteo if it gets really bad - they really helped me

dinny · 11/03/2009 14:44

can recommend an osteo in Battersea if thta is any help....

MoshiMoshi · 11/03/2009 18:58

Dinny - does he specialise in pregnant buttocks?! I am based in Chiswick so might see if someone closer to home can help but if not, I may well have to take you up on your recommendation. Thanks!
