The mongan method is the "real" hypno birthing method, it worked for me but you do really need to do the course if you can, lots are offering big discounts at the moment.

If youe get the HypnoBirthing course book you get the CDs with it.

you can get it on Amazon

Thanks ladies. Will have another look and try to decide. Any ideas when I should start it? Ok to start it as early as 20 weeks?

another vote for Maggie Howell's CD

I have lent it to three women since and they all found it useful.

A bit less hardcore than the mongan method- more of a relaxation CD TBH

wobbegong · 10/03/2009 16:17

The Maggie Howells one you probably want to leave till 6 weeks before you are due. It is all about birth, and at the moment maybe you are concentrating on "growing" your baby rather than birth? (sorry sounds a bit weird, I hope you know what I mean)

I listened to it every day- that's a lot of listening if you start at 20 weeks!

Beantin · 10/03/2009 16:17

Have spent hours listening to the natal hypnotherapy music with my DS who enjoys it after listening to it in utero. I listened to it throughout labour - just the music that is in the background to the other CDs. got the box set and went on a 2 day course, was great.

Met Maggie Howell - inspiring! My birth experience wasn't quite according to the philosophy, but both DH and I are glad we did CDs and course as felt soooo much more prepared and calm.

SnowlightMcKenzie · 10/03/2009 16:27

I'm not hugely comfortable with the hardcore philosophy so found the natal CD's on their own, with lots or reading about the physiology of birth and asking a billion questions on here was what worked (and it did work) for me.

Whatever you do it is important that you go into the birth positive and have strategies for keeping relaxed that you have practised in advance.

Good luck.

Ta. Hoping for VBAC. Some I'm looking at seem to be specifically for homebirth.

They're not all like this are they? Would love to try another homebirth but have been told NO NO NO.

Definately start as soon as you can, the other CD's aren't a hypno birth and I have to say it gets my goat when people then come back and say they tried hypno birting and it didn't work because it turns out they played a CD of nice music, well that will not give you the same effect at all.
I'm not suggesting the other methods aren't helpful but a hypno birth they are not.

georgiemum · 10/03/2009 17:30

Sooner the better. The key is to be relaxed and positive about the birth. Good luck!

BonyM · 10/03/2009 17:40

The Maggie Howells course has both a relaxation CD for use throughout pregnancy (really helps to get a decent night's sleep!) and a birth preparation one for use closer to the birth (from about 34 weeks iirc). There is also a CD of the music on its own that you can use during birth and a post-natal recovery one but I didn't use these.

Have to say I found them very good and managed to give birth to dd2 with just gas and air.

MrsSeanBean · 10/03/2009 17:42

I got a hypnobirthing CD. It relaxed me wonderfully when pregnant but didn't remember a darned thing when in labour, so ultimately it was a failure for me.

"I got a hypnobirthing CD. It relaxed me wonderfully when pregnant but didn't remember a darned thing when in labour, so ultimately it was a failure for me."

This is exactly what I mean, the course really is wrthwhile if you want a hypno birth, it really is a commitment and a change in thinking, you shouldn't need gas and air and you shouldn't "get through it" with a hypno birth it's a whole different experience, where there simply is no pain at all.

georgiemum · 12/03/2009 14:29

I had a client who overheard the midwife say 'she looks like she's dead'. Charming (!!) but you get the idea - blissful peace!
