Question about ultrasound scan prints

Hey,

Does anyone know if the measurement displayed in cm on the ultrasound print is the length of the baby?

The reason i ask is when i had my ultrasound with ds the measurement is 11cm, the scan measured him at 14.4 weeks and he arrived on his due date so it was pretty accurate.
I had my ultrasound for dc2 last week and the measurement on the card is 10.4cm and the told me i was exactly 11 weeks. Going by the first day of my last period i was estimated at 15 weeks, and when i got home and raided out my old pregnancy books it said at 11 weeks the baby would be approx 6.5cm(i'm sure?)

It crossed my mind that maybe the measurements on the print out mean something else, not the length. Can anyone explain it to me?

Head to bum I would have thought.

I think it is usually a crown-rump (or C-R) length, ie head to bum.

Depending on the type of book that you were looking at it may have had details for weeks of gestation rather than weeks of pregnancy.

reading your post just prompted me to have a look at my scan notes. I was dtaed same as my own dates at 13+0 and the crl was 6.7, which was showing as just below average. not sure if that helps.
was your ds big at birth?

elizabethsmum · 08/03/2009 21:04

The measurement is likely to be the depth at which the scan was being taken in your tummy. (If there are no actual measurements over the top of the baby and the measurement is just displayed on the side of the print).
Don't ask me how I know....OK I am a sonographer

No ds was 8pound10.. close to average i think. I don't know, I just wondered if them being so close in size but 3.4 weeks difference was normal, and because my edd was 4 weeks before from my scan date maybe there was a mistake somewhere. Ahh confusing stuff.

I don't think the measurements printed on the scan images are of the baby. I wondered if it was the wavelength of the scan, but I'll defer to elizabethsmum's explanation. It sounds like that's how far down jnr is from the surface of your belly.

I think its also true that some scans measure full length from head to heels and some only measure from head to butt. But I definitely defer to elizbethsmum's expert knowledge!
