Being sick every morning after taking tablets?

Hello. I am 33weeks pregnant and have had sickness on and off throughout the pregancy. I found out a few weeks ago I have anemia and folic acid deficency so have now got very strong iron and folic acid tablets.

I am starting to notice a pattern though. The tablets need to be taken on an empty stomach and preferably with orange juice. So have been taking them in the morning. But I am now throwing up about half hour or so after taking the tablets, which is quite painful, probably because I haven't eaten and is quite sudden - i need to run to the bathroom which is not like usual pregnancy sickness for me - I usually get a good amount of warning if I need to be sick. It feels different anyway.

Not really sure what to do? I don't want to stop taking the tablets incase it makes my anemia worse? But at the same time, don't want to make myself more ill by taking them? I forgot to take it yesterday and felt a lot better all day really. But on the whole, since taking them I have stopped going dizzy as often and don't feel like I can't get outof bed which I used to really stuffer with. I am still tired, but I would honestly be in tears at having to get up in the morning before as I was purly exhusted.

I have an appointment with my MW a week on monday, which is the next time she is working at our doctors surgery. Do you think it is ok to wait this long to see her?

Hello! I am 38 weeks and have been sick all the way through this pregnancy. I am on iron too. It was 3 a day , now its just one daily as my iron levels have improved.
My top tip would be to have breakfast as normal and then take your tablets at say ten, eleven when you are over that sicky morning feeling.

I felt just like you, dizzy, tired etc , and now that the iron have kicked in i feel like a new woman , well nearly!

Once the iron gets in your system you will feel heaps better. Take them with orange juice and avoid tea or coffee within a few hours of taking them.

I upped my intake of breakfast cereals with iron, red meat , apricots etc. I still feel tired in the afternoon, but 200% better than before. I had no energy to do anything.

Best of luck , hope this helps

You could try Spatone instead. It's a natural mineral water sachet thing, you mix it with juice if you like - it's really easily absorbed, no need to take on an empty stomach, and raised my iron very quickly indeed. The tablets upset a lot of people.

You can get Spatone in Boots on a three for two usually, it's 5.99 for a box of 30. I took two a day initially then just one.

I have got 2 free sample sachets of spatone, so might give them a try tomorrow. Just a bit wary when the MW has prescribed the tablets iyswim. My iron levels were very low.

spots - I did take with orange juice and I am actuallly wondering if maybe it is orange juice on an empty tummy that is making it worse? I don't manage to eat much breakfast as I can't face it. Sometimes a banana or something, others nothing. Today I didn't eat anything till 12pm and then had a cooked brekie in peace when DD goes to bed. She is only 1 so another reason it is hard to eat much.

I know what you mean. My iron was at 8.2 or somehting and they gave me a script and said 'Don't trust anything from a health food shop'. I took the spatone on advice from other mums on here, and my iron was up to 9.7 within a couple of weeks.

I got my homebirth!

Flightattendant27 · 06/03/2009 14:04

No I'm talking bollox.

Just searched my own messages.

it was 9.0 in April, took fersamal from the GP for 7 weeks, it went up to 9.5...then switched to spatone and it was pretty much 10 a few weeks later, just in time.

I think spatone works quicker iyswim.

soon2befamilyof4 · 06/03/2009 23:43

Not sure what mine is TBH.

Surely if the spatone was that great, the MWs would recomend it? Could it not have been that you had already been taking tablets for 7 weeks?

Sorry, that sounds like I am trying to say it isn't any good, I am not honestly, I am just trying to get my head round it all and what is best.

Spatone worked for me - I couldn't handle tablets either - and both mw and GP recommended that or Fluradix. The don't as a first option because they're expensive! Boots sometimes do 3 for 2s, thankfully.

Flightattendant27 · 07/03/2009 07:16

Soon2be - no probs, I felt like that too! veryone on here (Including Lulumama!) ended up shouting at me to 'Take the Spatone!! It'll work!!' and I was still hesitant but I took it and it was so trouble free - no side effects, I actually enjoyed taking it - I don't know whether that other .5 was lurking from the fersamal, waiting to appear in my blood but if not it was the work of the spatone.

It makes sense that it's absorbed better, as it's already dissolved in a liquid form and readily available to your body rather than packed up in a little pill that makes you constipated and sick. Not a science type so I don't understand it but I do believe it's the best stuff.

.5 in 7 weeks, or .5 in 3 weeks is how I see it.

Flightattendant27 · 07/03/2009 07:23

also I think GP's often just go for the tried and tested 'usual' prescription.

That doesn't mean it works best.

If you search Spatone on here you'll see posts from a variety of midwives and doulas (Klaw, Mears, etc etc) all recommending it fulsomely

You can take three a day if you want I think. I just know I felt better straight away.

soon2befamilyof4 · 07/03/2009 10:22

What do I then do about the folic acid as my tablet is combined? Do i just take the single one? I didn't know if it would be the same amounts etc?

OP posts:
Flightattendant28 · 07/03/2009 11:02

Don't worry about the amounts, it's unlikely to be tailored specifically to your needs iyswim.

You should take folic acid of course but maybe try and get some on its own.

People who find folic acid makes them feel ill, usually get on better taking it before bed. Apparently. Though it might just be the iron making you ill.

Flightattendant28 · 07/03/2009 11:02

Btw I didn't take Folic acid at all in either pregnancy, and both my children are weird fine

soon2befamilyof4 · 07/03/2009 11:37

I am only taking folic acid because my levels were very low at last blood tests.

OP posts:
Flightattendant28 · 07/03/2009 13:36

Hmm not sure how much you need and so on. It might be involved in absorption or use of iron in the body iyswim...althoguh I think it;s most crucial to development of baby in the first few weeks of pregnancy.
