Hmm, not sure if it causes SPD, but it can definitely exacerbate it (did for me!).

Maybe alternate breaststroke with e.g. backstroke and then that way you get the benefits of swimming but reduce the possible side-effects?

Doesn't cause it but I was told to avoid it by my osteopath and GP when I developed mild SPD in last pregnancy -it's the leg movements that exacerbate the problem. Other strokes are fine.

it doesn't cause it ,but can make it worse. Physio told me if you do proper breaststroke then this should be safe for back and pelvis.

I've got SPD and my physio has recommended swimming but has told me to vary the types of strokes I do.
Swimming is fab in pregnancy so if it's not causing u any probs then carry on with it

Swimming breaststroke gave me SPD in my first pregnancy. The symptoms started as soon as I started swimming and got dramatically better once I stopped. I probably was prone to it, obviously, but it was the trigger.

Agree with what has been said. I tend to do front crawl which is not going to aggravate/cause any sort of problem. I tend to avoid breaststroke as I can tell by the way my hips are moving as the pregnancy progresses that they are getting more lax and wouldn't want to create any problems...

MoshiMoshi · 06/03/2009 11:36

PS That is front crawl with bilateral breathing just to be safe!

I swam through my whole pregnancy ( breaststroke) and had no problems with SPD.

I've been swimming and I just flap my feet up and down behind me (not sure what it's called!) rather than my normal action of moving them in the same way as I do my arms, because I'd heard it can cause problems with your pelvis.
