Waterproof Mattress Protector

I bought a mattress protector at the weekend from Debenhams for £35 but am starting to think I really should have bought a waterproof one. I did see a waterproof sheet there but it looked really plasticy and would clearly be noisy when you slept on it, which would drive us both nuts.

I am 26 weeks but am leaking a bit when I cough or sneeze so really want to put something down now, but that will also be protective enough if my waters break in bed, and for the neverending post natal bleeding that I found quite heavy. It will be a June baby so we will be sleeping on this through the middle of summer.

Does anyone know if it is possible to buy a waterproof mattress protector that isn't noisy, isn't too hot and clammy but will protect our beautiful new mattress?

Warning, this may not help you much unless you have access to a Wal-Mart store: we have one that is waterproof and the plastic lining is quite soft so it's not loud. It's machine washable. Good thing as my waters really did break at night, and DS has vomited, weed and bled on it (bitten tongue) and then there were the night sweats after I had him... since we bought a new brand-new mattress when I was pregnant, no way was I going to sleep on it without a waterproof mattress pad.

If all else fails and you can't find one in the U.K. I can always buy it here (Canada) and post it to you.

I think I've actually seen them at Debenham's daisy. With the nice soft top and the waterproof bit underneath. Yes, here

I should also say, the plastic layer is on the bottom and the top of the mattress pad is quite soft cotton. So we're not actually sleeping on the plastic itself.

I have one and it is great, not plasticy, really soft.I bought one from the white company and as soon as I opened the packet I knew I wouldn't be able to sleep on it,far too crinkly, and then I saw the one we have in a baby catalogue,I think it may have been Bump to three.it has a breathable membrane type layer backing the cotton upper, you can't feel it at all as it is very soft.I co-sleep and so it is great.

I have one that I got in John Lewis and it isn't noisy at all. I got it when I was pregnant, but it has stayed on the bed for the last five years without ever making even the tiniest sound. It's been jolly useful too - waters broke in bed both times, babies have endlessly vomitted on it etc.

NorktasticNinja · 01/03/2009 21:23

I've got some from Ikea which aren't clammy or noisy. THey wash and dry really well too.

Qally · 01/03/2009 22:07

I have a JL one as well, and it's been worth its weight in gold. We got it because we got a really good mattress as a wedding present and I was scared of waters breaking on it - which they didn't. But I've leaked milk all over it (POURING the first week or two), the baby's been sick all over it, and I am comforted to know that it stops any spores in the mattress being inhaled by the baby when he's in our bed. I can't tell if it's on or off, it's that unobtrusive.

IMO it's also worth getting a tiny one for the cot.

Hippychick do great ones, not at all crinkly, just like soft cotton.

missblythe · 01/03/2009 22:13

The John Lewis ones are fab.

We've got them on all our beds now, they completely stop any sweat/blood/amniotic fluid/tea going through onto the mattress, but aren't hot or noisy at all.

It's just like a normal sheet to sleep on, but with a rubbery backing.

You can get large plastic 'dust sheets' from B&Q. We got one both times my wife was about to give birth.

We laid the sheet on the matress and tucked it in as they are quite big. Then put the matress protector on top to keep it firmly in place (elasticated matress protectors best for this of course). Not too noisy to be honest once the matress protector is on top.

Then my wife's waters broke in the bathroom both times so a complete waste of £2.99 x 2

dinkystinky · 02/03/2009 10:24

Hippychick sheet is good (great for protecting mattress from baby vom/poo/wee when little one arrives too) though you could just get a whole load of maternity mats from Mothercare and pop them all on your bed too.

Thanks everyone for all your ideas and experiences. A huge help. I am happy to pay around £35 for a mattress protector that we can leave on the bed through summer and winter as I think they are worth their weight in gold. Nothing worse than 'orrible marks on a mattress and life is unpredictable with children.

As there were four strong endorsements for the John Lewis one, I think that will be my choice. IKEA is a bit of a trek from here, so only go when there are a bunch of things we need to buy.

Tescos do one for a couple of pounds and they're fine. I used them when I was preggers as it happened my waters only trickled at home then had to be broken at the hospital.

It isn't noisy, sweaty or clammy and did the job just fine.

TsarChasm · 05/03/2009 10:07

La Redoute do them. Good prices and all sorts of sizes and types.

amidaiwish · 05/03/2009 10:11

i've got these on all the beds - easy to sleep on even without a sheet in an emergency. can be tumble dried too.

Here They do others too though.

brettgirl2 · 05/03/2009 10:19

I've got a tesco's one with a normal mattress cover over, I think it's OK too.

Betadad - what about selling them on ebay? You don't want to waste £6.

Lemontart · 05/03/2009 10:22

Dunelm do lovely ones that are soft and the plasticky but is internal and no rustling

SparkyToo · 13/03/2009 17:28

This waterproof mattress protector is also a good one. It has a lovely soft cotton towelling type feel (unlike those plastic ones) which also means it doesn't make those squeeky noises everytime you move! My boys don't get all hot on them either.
