Has anyone done the NHS ante-natal classes at Teddingotn Clinic? I'm due to start going pretty soon and wondered if they are any good at all? What is covered and if Dh is invited to any?

I am not doing NCT so view them as relatively important...

Thanks for any feedback!

Ooh good question, I am going to keep an eye on this thread too! I am booked on ones at Tedd clinic too, starting April. Do you happen to know if husbands can come too or is it for mums only? Thanks!

Hi FlirtyThirty - first of all congratulations to you and mumming bird! Have you started classes yet?

I went to classes at Teddington clinic for both my DC. First time round I found them really helpful - there were about a dozen mums in the class, and usually there was both an HV and a midwife there and plenty of opportunity to ask questions and cover topics that particularly interested or worried you. Dads got invited to one class in the evening. The absolute best thing about it was meeting other local mums - I made some very good friends there who I still see regularly, five years on!

The second time (about 3 years ago) was quite a different experience - the group was huge (30+, not necessarily all in the same session, but quite a few people came and went over the four weeks), which made it more difficult to get to know people and discuss exactly what you wanted. I also found the topics covered less helpful, but put this almost entirely down to it being my second pregnancy - the course was very much focussed on the birth itself and breastfeeding, which I just wasn't so curious about having been through it before.

On balance though, I would say it's definitely worthwhile attending - they always do a contact list of all the participants, and I can't stress enough how invaluable it was to me to meet others in the same position as it were . And as long as you're not shy about asking the HV to cover topics that particularly concern you, it should be possible to get all the information you want.

The clinic also used to run Post-natal classes (not sure if funding cuts stopped these?) which you can take your baby along to, and these were very helpful, covering things like weaning, first-aid, sleep problems etc. Plus you could meet yet more new mums! So if you get offered these, definitely try and get along to some.

Hope this helps, good luck with everything!

Its not a bad clinic if people turn up, i went when i was due with my first baby, fathers are not usually allowed until the last one something about saving embarrasement when talking about breast feeding. one session was also cancelled as only myself and another mother showed up..
