I'm 33 weeks at pres...I had a UTI at the start of last week, I got amoxycillin from the docs and now I seem to have a nasty yeast infection....

However, I got and used a canesten pessary and cream (under advice from the midwife that it was OK to use)... and 2 days later it doesn't seem to be helping at all... I'm worse than ever and it's really getting very painful now. As of this afternoon I have been slathering the sore bits in natural yoghurt which has been the only thing to relieve it at all.

... now I'm getting concerned that it isn't thrush at all, I'm really swollen down there, and in places it feels kinda "bumpy" like a rash or something, and I am sure i can feel like of a pronounced vein on my labia (jeez I feel embarassed using a word like that in fornt of people).

Could this be vaginal piles ? Or something else ? I just want it to stop hurting so damn much...

Any thoughts ?

I used amoxycillin for an ear infection whilst pg and the doctor told me that it might lead to thrush, which it did so I got another prescription but that got rid of it really quickly. I'm sure it was much better after 2 days.
It sounds like thrush but I think you should make a GP appointment to be sure.

I was pretty disturbed by the way my bits changed during second pg! Got thrush, but also the swelling you mention sounds familiar, I thought piles but mw said the extra blood supply can make everything bigger. Loads of canesten cream, and no perfumed shower gel or anything like that, the thrush eventually went away. They didn't return to normal shape and size until after I had him, though.

vaginal varicose veins

Had them with dc2 and ouch

MrsDoylesBoyle · 22/02/2009 23:35

I should add that they could be felt on my labia and if you looked could see dark bumpy veins.

Hope your fanjo is better soon.

gratuitous i think it sounds like varicosity whuch is a bit like as you say piles of the vulva

canesten etc will not help

i would explain to gp ...

i have not had it but a lot of friends have

the advice is - sit more with feet up to stop blood pooling

to relieve pain use a large sanitary towel to increase upward pressure and again relieve pooling

if you google varicose veins of the vulva you will fine more or there have been lots of threads on MN if you search the archives

if its painful i think this is most probably it

it goes after childbirth i think x

hi there!it soundds like vulval varicose veins, i have them too, so delightful! you'd best get it checked out, but the advice i got was feet up as much as poss, wear support tights during day (sooooo sexy!), and they will go down after birth. things have definitely improved but god am i looking forward to being back to normal (?) down there soon - 4 weeks to go....

gratuitousdisguise · 23/02/2009 02:07

Thank you all very much for your replies... I think I will get it checked out just to be sure of what's going on down there. I hope it's not the varicose veins, because I really can't be doing with being this sore for the next 7 weeks !!!

It does sound like varicosities (fairly common in pregnancy so don't worry) but it also sounds like you are still suffering with the Thrush!

I have had recurrent thrush recently (been treated with the pessary / cream combo twice!) but it didn't seem to stay away for long. I mentioned it to my midwife and she told me to.....wait for it....IRON my knickers! Once I picked myself up off the floor and stopped giggling she actually explained it to me and its really logical....when we have a little bit of a yeast infection and we wash our undies, apparently the bacteria aren't totally banished! OOOEEEERRRR!!

So the logic is that if you iron your (cotton!) gusset, the bacteria are killed with the heat of the iron. It has worked for me I must say.

Pillicock is spot on with the advice re varicosities (I also have a similar kinda prob - oh the joy of pregnancy!). Try to avoid long periods on your feet as gravity will make you swell. Wearing support knickers with a sanitary towel can help too! And yes, they DO disappear shortly after birth so there is light at the end of the tunnel! If I get REALLY painful, I lie on the bed with a cold pack wrapped in a flannel 'down there'. It sounds glamorous, I know but it really helps.

Good luck!

[gosh] re the ironing gussets but makes sense i suppose!

i send my ironing to a lovely lady who might not appreciate this little 'add on' in her job description!

clouiseg · 24/02/2009 18:39

lol pillicock I can just imagine her face when you hand her a bag of gussets to iron hahaaaaa

I must admit I felt like a bit of a wally ironing my knickers...but also came over all Hyacinth Bucket and imagined this is how the other half live lol. I think in reality I was just miffed at how much of the ironing board my HUUUUGGGGGEEE knickers took up! I can guarantee if I'd worn them 9 months ago I wouldn't be due to drop anytime now

plantsitter · 24/02/2009 18:41

I boil washed my knickers when I had recurrent thrush - obviously big preggy cotton ones - same effect as the ironing.

Emmahugs · 14/03/2009 11:59

Arnica for vag varicose veins stops them feeling so sore.
