Hello!I am 36 weeks, and baby is breech. It goes from breech to transverse, but still not head down. Due to complictions with the last birth of dd1, forceps delivery, episiotomy, manual removal of placenta and spd on top of this, my midwife suggested c section. After much discussion i think this is the way to go and i am seeing a consultant next week.
When will they do a c section?
Baby is a good size so hoping they will give me a date as i am really suffering from pain with the symphysis pubis problem.

I would be grateful to hear your experiences

hopefully not before 39 weeks, as respritary distress is more common in babies born by cs before 39 weeks.

Any one else? I was hoping for someone to reply who has been in the same situation please. Thanks me23 , but that doesnt really answer my question.

Have you considered having your baby turned?

GreenPeas · 21/02/2009 19:54

DD was breech and I was scheduled for a CS at 39+2 (as it happened my waters broke at 38 weeks so I ended up with a very calm "emergency" section). I don't think they like to go below 39 weeks if possible but I don't know how much this varies by hospital.

39 weeks since they like to leave it as late as possible. However, I had mine at 38 weeks because there were so many C-sections scheduled. It might depend on your Consultant and hospital though.

Yes Nabster, thought about having it turned, only a 50 % chance of this working. Will mean a day in hospital and there seem to be risks with this too. I have a large amount of amniotic fluid, so the mid wife says that this may hinder the process of turning and it may turn back as its been breech for so long.

Thanks for that Green peas, i was wondering what would happen if my waters broke before a planned c section. Good to know all was calm with your emergency c section, makes me feel better . Thank you so much

With dd1 she was head down all the way, so this breech has really thrown me! I seem to be more paranoid this time around and the fact that dd1 came very quickly is another worry.

good luck! Baby might suprise you and turn around on her own

Spotsanddots · 21/02/2009 20:49

DD1 was 3 days early and i have excess amniotic fluid (which i have been told may mean that the waters will break early due to the amount and weight of the waters).
Thanks for all your info everyone, i have my appointment booked for monday for scan and consultant, so at least i know a little more now. I will try and stop stressing and monday is not far off

Yes, lets hope it decides to have a good wriggle tomorrow. If not it will be fate.

Its usually done at somewhere between 38-39 weeks. Even at 38 weeks the little one will be fine, but it is preferable to wait a bit iff possible.

By waiting you do of course though increase the risk you will go into labour by yourself, but if that happens, they will just do it then rather than waiting. So technically an 'emergency' section, but in reality done in a calm way as there is usually plenty of time to sort it out.

Good luck!

Spotsanddots · 21/02/2009 21:02

Thanks mags, baby is a good size from the scan . AT 34 weeks it was approx 5lb 13 and predicted to be 9lb at 40 weeks. So i guess it is about 6lb 13 now, which is a good weight. Obviously they could be wrong with the size, but it feels quite big compared with dd1.

Unfortunately I know the risks of turning and it isn't something I would ever have again. Not that I will be having more children.

Hi DS1 was a persistent breech - identified at 32 weeks and never bothered moving round. At 36 weeks everyone started getting interested. A registrar was keen to turn him but I refused - she mentioned the words "foetal distress"; I didn't like the odds, and I felt strongly that if I had to have a Caesarian then I didn't want it to be an "emergency." I also thought that as he'd been breech for so long (I had to jog up and down in the car park at the 20 week scan to get him to turn so they could scan him!) that he could just turn himself back - so why would I want to put him at risk. I had an elective section at 38+ 4. Another friend was very committed to a vaginal birth and had two attempts at turning which didn't work. She went for the section after she asked how many vaginal breech births our hospital had done in the last year. Er... one. Best of luck for Monday, it will be fine, I think they'll basically be guided by what you want.

Mine was scheduled for 39 weeks. Baby decided to go head down before the pre-CS scan and they sent me home again!

Spots, actually read all the thread now. I too had excess waters. My understanding is with a breec/transverse that there is extra risk if your waters break spontaneously. I was admitted to the ante natal ward for 2 weeks.

I think if you are at home, and your waters break, the advise was to get on your hands and knees and phone for an ambulance. Maybe you nned to discuss with your MW....
