Have a friend who has PCOS, she is 16 weeks pregnant and quite worried about miscarriage.

Just wondered if anyone has any info or experiences I can pass on.

Miscarriage after 14 weeks is especially rare, thank god. PCOS affects the initial fertility iyswim, not an existing pg.

Thanks Scorp, I really didn't know much about PCOS, I thought it could cause miscarriage too.

in the first trimester, PCOS sufferes have a higher rate, whilst the hormones balance out iyswim, but i think at 16 weeks she can feel safe

Has she had a scan yet?

Sushipaws · 19/02/2009 22:20

Yes, she had a scan at 12 weeks and all seemed fine. Her doctors have told her not to worry, but I think she still can't believe she's pregnant.

Hi, I have pcos and had a successful pregancy two years ago and i am pregnant again. My pcos was quite serious. Tell your friend not to worry and enjoy being pregnant.

Hi I have bad PCOS too, weirdly tho', as it is still in my blood after having ovarian cancer!! - anyway.. mc is higher during 1st tri, due to hormone levels and blood sugar. I had to take metformin (for blood sugar) for 12 weeks and have just finished following my 2nd successful IVF..

tell your friend to try and relax and if she can afford it, go for a private reassurance scan. I am having one at 16wks, cos I am an eternal worrier.

And tell her to enjoy the pg

and tell her congrats!

I have it and was prescribed progestrone for the first 10 weeks of this pg (have a DS and didn't take progestrone with him) and then as the placenta takes over the PCOS becomes irrelevant to the pg apparently

Hi

I have PCOS and am currently pregnant with my second.
PCOS can increase risk of miscarriage - in fact I had an early miscarriage before this pregnancy.

However the part to worry about is the 12 week point, when the hormones stop supporting the baby's growth and the placenta takes over. This is when things can go wrong.

If she is past this point, she just needs to relax and enjoy! There is no way to say things can't go wrong in any pregnancy at any point, but I think she is past the worst!

I know she will worry though - I told myself once I got past 12 weeks that I would be fine but didn't really relax until I had the 20 week scan.
