I've recently been diagnosed with sciatica, I have pain in my back and front on one side and all down my legs. My GP says it's caused my some existing damage to my back that is being made worse by he growing baby, he also said it would get worse before it got better. I'm only 24 weeks pregnant and I don't know how I'm going to get to the end if I feel like this every day. Can anyone help me?

Hello
i really do understand how your feeling. This is my third and final pregnancy and i have suffered since about 20 weeks with s.p.d. it has taken until 32 weeks pregnant to get any help and i am now recieving physio which has improved it loads, however i went for my first shopping trip just over a week ago and i slipped on some water in the ladies toilet and did the splits.
i have been back to physio and she has confirmed that i have now trapped my sciatic nerve so my left leg is out of use due to spd and my right leg is out of use due to my trapped nerve. To top it all my baby is breech and large for my dates i'm measuring two weeks bigger than i should be. and i was hoping for a nice simple delivery.

I would also recommend the acupuncture. Had bad sciatica with first pregnancy - made worse by digging up the garden but the acupuncture seemed to work miracles. Second baby was breech and large (9lb 2oz on arrival) and was being threatened with a caesarian. HAd acupuncture which consisted of having a hot charcoal crayon being held next to my little toe (yes it does sound weird)for about 30 minutes - they sort of hold it there until it's almost burning your toe and then take it away for a few seconds then put it back again and so on. That evening the baby turned (an alien like experience) so I am a real convert now. Good luck

Hi Kate100,

I am 25 weeks and have just started to suffer with my back and sciatica too. When I first saw my midwife (back in week 12) she gave me the local hospital obstetric osteopath's number for self-referral. I have suffered from back pain in the past (due to my profession at the time) and have spent 100's of pounds on private treatment. Needless to say its great to know that we have access to NHS treatment for Sciatica/back pain during pregnancy - get on to your midwife!! Smile
