Maclaren XLR for a newborn?

I'm due DC4 in June and have been through the WHOLE pram spectrum with DC1-3. Very conscious of this being my last pregnancy though and that baby will be arriving at the beginning of the summer. Have visions of long walks and picnics with new baby over the holidays, however in reality, do generally travel by car mostly. Had thought about (another) pram to pushchair type thing but suspect that I will get limited use of the pram mode as my babies are usually big and that when the time comes to convert to a pushchair, I shall be longing to swap my big cumbersome one for a Maclaren! Quite fancy this www.mothercare.com/gp/product/B00116V3NU/sr=1-4/qid=1234822546/ref=sr_1_4/280-7706286-1128642 ?ie=UTF8&m=A2LBKNDJ2KZUGQ&n=44346031&mcb=core
but DH was horrified that I'd even think about putting a newborn in it. Don't want baby 'rattling' around in it.

hmm

the advatnage of winter babies in strollers si that you can tuck them up with blankets, footmuffs, lambskins etc so they don;t look so rattley

personally I'd get a proper pram secondhand and then buy a Quest or even a Triumph.

The XLR is really expensive and isn;t as light as you might think, but if you really wanted one they are about to bring out a 'softcot' thus which makes it a bit more prammy. I couldn;t work out if the baby would be facing you in the carrycot or whether it's more of a glorified footmuff though.

I am due in May and have just bought this one

It will be my third one and I wanted soemthing easy for getting in and out of car for twice daily school runs.

The link doesn't seem to work but assuming the title is right, we have a mclaren XLR and it does go really flat, so fine for a newborn on that basis. We had our daughter in a bugaboo carrycot til 6 months which I loved, and just go the mclaren for traveling so can't be definitive, but it does look like they sell a newborn softcot which would probably be ok even in summer if you didn't pad it too much.

What about this...here

v. light and umbrella fold for boot. Car seat and carycot just click on/off. Great buggy for when they're bigger...still using mine with ds2.

I had McLaren XLR for DS3 from the very start. I used to swaddle him in blanket and provide a kind of "nest" with fleecy blankets that sort of held him in as he could not really be secured with the harnes as newborn.
Admittedly, this was my "secoondary" pram when out and about as my "proper" pram (Mutsy Urban Rider) was just too darn heavy and cumbersome to get in and out of the car all the time.
He is now 10 months old and seems to be no worse for wear ...

I have one for my DS, now 11 months. I had it from birth and intended it to last, and it has. I went through several buggies with DD but I have never felt the need to buy a replacement for my XLR. Ok, it's a little heavy but I can carry it up stairs by myself, if necessary. It is perfect for me because we don't drive and I know he's comfortable in it when we walk everywhere. However, what suits me may not suit you so go with your gut instinct.
Btw, I never felt my newborn DS was unsafe in it. It has a headhugger for added security, hth.

I had the whole fabulous pram thing with DD1, but swapped to a Maclaren XT at about 5/6 months. With DD2 I got out the pram again but found it impossible to push and manouver around with one hand (too big and cumbersome) whilst holding DD1's hand walking along etc (DD1 had just turned 2), so basically DD2 was in the Maclaren XT from birth and it was great for her and me - so much easier. It's totally knackered now after two children and I recently bought a new Quest to replace it (DD2 just turned 2 and still needs to go in buggy occasionally), which is only suitable for babies from 3 months as it doesn't go completely flat (although it does go pretty flat). Anyway, DC3 due in 7 weeks and after much deliberation I've decided not to bother getting the pram out or getting anything else. I thing the likelyhood of me using the buggy for the little one in the first 3 months is pretty minimal (I find slings so much easier when they are tiny), and if I did have to pop him in it briefly I don't suppose it would be an issue. Go with whatever you feel works, no point having a big pram etc if you are not going to use it.

We've just started using a new Techno XLR for DS2 - he was 15 days old on the first day, and he's fine in it. It lies right back, but it takes about the same space as the Maclaren Quest which we bought for DS1 at 3 months old, and it's much easier on the bus which we have to use than a pram with a carrycot.

Just to let you know that Mothercare has a really good deal on XLRs at the mo - £175 down from £245.

I ordered mine yesterday in store (because I wanted a blue one which are hard to track down.)

I'm planning on using it from birth with DC3 as I have learned my lesson about buying bulky stuff for newborns with previous 2 DDs...
