Private health insurance for the baby - before birth?

I'll add this question to this forum too. We want to get the baby a private health insurance. Do you have any advice how to go about it, who to go with? We'd like to set it up as early as possible, so that they can't exclude any pre-existing conditions that might appear in the first few weeks.

Is it common to set this up already before birth? Is BUPA the way to go?

Many thanks!!!

We're also trying to do this at the moment.

The problem we're coming up against is that they want the name of the baby - now as I'm only 9 weeks gone, and we obviously don't know what sex it is this is bit tricky.

If we succeed I will let you know,

What?? That is unreal. People often anyway change their mind about the baby's name once they're born... I cannot believe that! Surely it's the existence of this individual that counts, not their name....How frustrating...

What's your research showing otherwise? What kinds of deals are there around and how much do they cost roughly? I just looked at a couple briefly and some of them had a clause that if for some things there's NHS treatment available within 6 weeks, child is not allowed for private health care. Outrageous and totally defeats the object.... There is a reason why people want to avoid NHS...

We're actually getting it through my DH's work scheme - which in effect is AXA.

I'm not sure you can insure them before they are born
We just added them to our existing healthcover when they were born

Hi, we are upgrading to the family cover provided by my workplace. It's by CIGNA. If you register baby within the 1st 30 days of life, they are not subject to medical underwriting apart from certain exclusions. I don't think we register them until the baby is born and in any case, if a neonate is taken seriously ill, I think it will go into a neonatal unit and there are no private neonatal units in the UK that I am aware of so it will get NHS treatment anyway.
