i just got a letter from the hospital saying my iron level is low (i'm nearly 30 weeks - had bloods done at 28...)

Useless GP can't see until next week, receptionist says it's not an emergency I don't have any community midwife,

does anyone know if I can get iron supplements over the counter? I'm taking pregnacare already but should I be taking iron supplements on top of these?

Thanks.

do you know what your iron levels where? i got blood tests done at around the same time that showed i was enimic but when i spoke 2 the mw she sed its normal for iron levels to drop and they compare the iron levels to what they should be pregnant or not so unless your levels r extremely low i wouldnt panic too much they put me on some awful iron tablets that made me constipated and vomit consantly and i could harly take them anyway try eating iron rich foods until you see your doctor xx

hi, level is 11.4

have been feeling odd this week - more tired and very thirsty - thought I might be developing diabetes but maybe its this instead.

Going to pop out to Boots now and look for Spatone.

Thanks.

You could check with the pharmacist at Boots about what is save/appropriate to take?

From what I remember mine was about 10.5 and it is low but not anything to worry about.I was prescribed Ferrous sulphate - not sure why the GP can't just do that I don't think I even saw them as it is quite common in pregnancy.

Be warned - I had severe constipation and at one point was having a tin of prunes a day!

I 2nd spatone. It doesn't make you constipated AND you can get it on prescription from your dr. You can also buy it from Boots (sometimes on the buy2 get 1 free).

I had about 10 ish blood & the spatone helped & it pinged back up when baby was born.

I drank Mackeson and lime while pregnant and breastfeeding as iron tablets didnt really agree with me. Was told to try Guinness but....ERGHHHH

The best tip I got when I was on iron tablets was to take it with orange juice and not with a cup of tea as it can't be absorbed properly.

Do find out what your levels actually are - as has been said, it is normal for your iron levels to drop while pregnant and doesn't necessarily mean you're anaemic. That said, if you've been feeling tired then spatone (or floradix) won't do any harm and may well be the boost you need.

Definitely avoid caffeine around iron suplements as it inhibits absorbtion - Vitamin C makes iron more accessible, hence orange juice is a good thing.

Hi I Had my bloods taken at 30 wks - was supposed to be 28 wks, they were 10.3 - the norm is about 11.7, I had to take the ferrous sulphate twice a day for the last month - had bloods taken 2 weeks ago and heard nothing so must be all fine.
If your bloods are 11.5 thats probably why they're not too worried....

titmouse · 14/02/2009 18:46

11.4 is not bad, some spatone and increasing your dietary intake of the iron-full foods should help.
mine is 9.6 and the MW is not happy and I've been given iron tablets, she said they prefer low iron to be in the region of 10. Definitely avoid the actual iron tablets if you can, they are not always digestible for everybody.

I agree with spatone - it's great stuff, far gentler on your stomach than the iron tablets the dr would give you.
