Painful fingers and thumbs at 34 weeks - should I be worried?

Looking for some reassurence really. In the last week I've developed the most painful joints in my fingers and thumbs. It has started to wake me up at night as catching my hands on the bed clothes shocks me with the pain. In the morning I can barely move my hands then after about an hour they start to get better and it eases off during the day. I've never had any joint problems before.

My fingers are quite swollen and have been for the last 4 weeks or so, so it could be to do with the water retention I suppose.

Has anyone else heard of this. Not sure whether to go and see the doc about it or just wait to see midwife at next schedualed appointment which is in a week or so.

Not sure, could it be carpal tunnel syndrome??

Is it affecting all of your fingers??

If you are worried, give your MW a call and see what they can tell you over the phone.

I don't think it's carpal tunnel as it's generalised across all my joints and I don't have any change in sensation in my hands. I suppose I'm worrying as if it continues I could imagine actually holding the baby would be difficult at times when they really hurt.

I will try and call the midwife, didn't think of that, have clearly lost my brain too!

Are they pins and needley as well?

It could be carpal tunnel as instertwittynickname says - if it is they can give you wrist splints for the remainder of your pgy which will help.

If it is carpal tunnel, it will disappear magically after you have given birth.

I had it with dd2 but not with any of my other pregnancies.

Ask your mw or doc

I think you need to phone a MW - it might be a sign of pre eclamsia? Probably not, but it should be checked just in casE?

Swollen fingers def worth checking out as can be sign of pre-eclampsia. In fact anything out of the ordinary during pg should be checked out - ring your midwife. I had PE and fingers were swollen but not painful - think painful fingers more likely to be carpal tunnel syndrome? Def get it checked though even if it's just for reassurance

I have swallen fingers and hands and developed pins and needles sensation few days ago. It started with just pins and needles during night time, but now it is throughout the day, so i guess it is carpal thingy.... good thing that not long to go and apparently disappearsafter PG { hopefull sigh}
