Hi,

I have a five month old baby and have just stopped breastfeeding.I have just done a pregnancy test and it's positive, although I know breastfeeding is not a contraceptive does it produce any hormones that would mimic a new pregnancy or am I actually just pregnant? Does anyone with more grey matter than me happen to know?

congratulations!

Its a myth that when you are breastfeeding, you can't get pg...you certainly can..so...congratulations are in order I guess!

PerArduaAdAmor · 11/02/2009 15:11

Don't know for sure, but I'm guessing congratulations are in order

StealthPolarBear · 11/02/2009 15:11

Wow, congratulations!

Lotster · 11/02/2009 15:16

Tests can sometimes give false negatives, but they very, very rarely give false positives. They respond to the pregnancy hormone in your urine, which must be present, so as everyone has said, congrats are in order!

Are you ok about it though, must be a bit of a shocker?

Merryoncemore · 11/02/2009 15:21

Hi,

Thank you all for your congrats, we were trying, so happy but cautious. We lost 2 before my beautiful daughter was born and therefore didn't want to count our chickens and leave a substantial gap so fingers crossed that once again all will be well. I'm slightly in shock and can't wait until my husband gets home from work so I can let him know (I know bad me, can't hold me water). I've just worked out that my due date would be 7wks after daughters 1st birthday. God I'm going to be knackered for years!

Congrats sounds like me a few years ago i fell pg when my dd was 5& 1/2 mths it was hard work at first but they are 8 and 9 now and they are really the best of friends and great company for each other.

Merryoncemore · 11/02/2009 16:06

Thanks Pinkbump, not envisioning that it will be easy in the short term but hopefully in the longer term we'll be were you are now.

Congratulations! Will be tough at first but worth it in long run as you say.

alexpolismum · 11/02/2009 17:47

Wow, this is just like me last year - I also got pregnant whilst breastfeeding and with no period after giving birth. My ds was 14 months old when dd was born. Yes, it can be tough, but on the other hand, I was already changing nappies, etc, so I was already in the swing of things, if you see what I mean. Rather this than stop and then start the whole process again when I'd got past the baby stage with ds! That's how I see it!

Congratulations!

ilovemydogandMrObama · 11/02/2009 18:24

Um, you can get pregnant without having a period OMG!

alexpolismum · 11/02/2009 20:08

yes, ilovemydog, I know that. I just mentioned it because the pregnancy came as a surprise to me.

ilovemydogandMrObama · 11/02/2009 20:36

I don't know that and am freaking out as I thought I had to get my period back (DS is 11 months)

Really, I wasn't be sarcastic. Really.

alexpolismum · 11/02/2009 20:50

Oh I see. Sorry, I misunderstood.

Yes, it can definitely happen, it has done to me and also to my sister. However, my gynaecologist told me it wasn't common, if that's any comfort.
