I have just been to the hospital for my anti-d, bloods & a check up (28weeks) & I have noticed that in the section about urine it says GLU 5.5
Does anybody know what this means?
Thanks

its the glucose levels in your urine

LukeyMasonsMummy · 10/02/2009 16:49

Ah, ok, thanks, just at all previous check ups the box has either been crossed out or states nil.
Does this mean anything that there is glucose at a level of 5.5 does anybody know. Thank you

I think thats a normal level - but thats just be dredging it up from the back of my mind somewhere so don't take it as gospel! What I am sure of is that they would have told you if there was a problem and started talking about having a glucose tolerance test etc. So if they said nothing I think you can relax about it!

nailpolish · 10/02/2009 16:56

there should be very little or no glucose in the blood
but pregnancy is different ( i think) im not a mw
im sure they would have done further tests if they were worried
it can be an idication of diabetes or infection in non pg people, dont know about pg women, sorry

does it say anything in the notes?

nailpolish · 10/02/2009 16:56

SORRY

THERE SHOULD BE LITTLE OR NO GLUCOSE IN THE URINE

LukeyMasonsMummy · 10/02/2009 16:58

Ok, thank-you
I will mention it when I am seeing someone next week, and avoid the temptation to google!
Just found it weird that for the first time there was a number.. I went into prem labour at 24weeks (luckily stopped with lots of drugs)and I read into everything far too much since that! Especially when they sent for a consultant - but all he did was feel my stomach, say 'hmm' quite a lot to the midwife and book my next apt!

Are you sure it's in reference to urine?

I'm not an expert and may be wrong, but thought that in healthy kidneys that are functioning well, glucose does not appear unless there is a problem eg diabetes. And even then, unless they sent off a sample to the lab (rather than just 'dipsticking' it in front of you) they would not be able to get an accurate measurement? If you had provided a sample at an earlier appt that had been sent off for testing it could be an actual measurement, but 5.5 is quite high to show in urine and therefore if no-one mentioned this to you at the appt, I doubt it means the urine glucose level tbh.

It sounds more likely to be a blood glucose level they have recorded in the wrong place, in which case 5.5 is fine

Ask your midwife when you next see her

firstontheway · 10/02/2009 17:00

I type slow

LukeyMasonsMummy · 10/02/2009 17:00

nailpolish no, there doesn't appear to be anything else written, just bloods taken, dizzy spells - slightly low bp, and some squiggle that I assume only mw's or docs can read - i think it may be shorthand for something!

OP posts:
nailpolish · 10/02/2009 17:02

firstontheway is right - if this was a blood glucose level it would be perfectly fine

id ask them about it

LukeyMasonsMummy · 10/02/2009 17:03

firstontheway it is def in the urine box, they only had a urine sample.. they have taken bloods which results will be back tomorrow, they said they are doing the 'full works' on my blood, but I assumed this was just to do with anti-d.. Unsure.. Hmm...

OP posts:
Northernlurker · 10/02/2009 17:03

I think it's a blood level - don't the urine sticks just go with 'trace' +, ++ or +++?

nailpolish · 10/02/2009 17:04

a dipstick just has trace + +++ etc
but if its done in the lab they usually get a figure

you have to come back and tell us the outcome of this - its going to be on my mind!!

LukeyMasonsMummy · 10/02/2009 17:09

Ok, hmm.. thank-you guys, I may call and see if i can talk to someone quickly.. if not chase it up tomorrow.
It is def not from blood, my last blood results are written from weeks ago, and the blood they took today was still sat in front of me! but they do have some machine where they take your pee to, it's not tested infront of you.. Unsure what it is for tho! (it beeps, lol)
Puzzling, wish I'd looked before i left, but the doc didn't seem to want to chat..

OP posts:
firstontheway · 10/02/2009 17:09

They usually show as trace, +, ++ etc but those also correlate as numbers relating to g/L. But even then, trace= 1, + = 2.5 etc so 5.5 seems a random figure to have pulled out the air from a dipstick test.

Unless, as I said before, they sent a sample off to the lab. But then a result of 5.5 is high and unless there are reasons for this already (are you diabetic?) they should be following it up, and I'm sure (I'd hope!) someone would've mentioned it to you.

Is anything writen in the other boxes on the table? Under abbreviations, pro, leu, SG etc? or are they blank?

LukeyMasonsMummy · 10/02/2009 17:10

I will go get my notes now and check, back in a few mins
And no, I am not diabetic.

Glucose in urine isn't a very good indicator of blood glucose, especially in pregnancy.

All through my pregnancy I had ++/+++ glucose in my urine, and my friend who analyses body fluids for a living asked the consultant about it for me. Basically your kidneys just dump glucose into urine above a certain concentration in your blood - and this level often drops in pg. As your blood glucose rises perfectly normally after eating, then falls as insulin is released, some people will dump a whole lot of sugar during this peak

LukeyMasonsMummy · 10/02/2009 17:23

Nothing else written on my notes.
cmotdibbler thanks, I think that makes sense, I am guessing that anything else will show on my blood work.
I called the surgery & my mw has left for the day, I may try and call tomorrow. Was wondering if this could explain me drinking a lot, feel quite dizzy, hot and queasy at times

OP posts:
Northernlurker · 10/02/2009 17:32

Err = tbh I think being heavily pregnant explains those symptoms quite nicely! Ask your midwife tomorrow just to be sure though.

llareggub · 10/02/2009 17:36

Have you had a glucose tolerance test? Gestational diabetes can develop in pregnancy out of the blue, and some women do get very thirsty. I have it and my blood sugar levels have to be below 5.8 before eating and 7.9 an hour after eating, but normally my reading is somewhere between 4.1 and 4.8. Incidentally, I've never had glucose in my urine.

LukeyMasonsMummy · 10/02/2009 17:47

I am hoping it is just a rather heavily pregnant thing.. I have a lovely midwife who is 'taking care of me' after traumatic delivery of my ds and my prem labour this time round, I will give her a call, sure it's nothing and I'm being paranoid, but she will also be able to access my blood results for me which should be back by 2pm tomorrow.

I have been drinking a lot, and waking up to drink in the night (i keep a bottle of water by the bed) But I was nicknamed thirsty as a child (i used to go up to everyone and just say thirsty till I was about 5), so I just assumed it was me being me..

Ah well, I am sure they will phone me if anything comes back weird or they need to test me further..

DaisyMooSteiner · 11/02/2009 05:18

Glu 5.5 just means there's a trace of glucose in your urine. Most midwives would just write 'trace' but the approximate amount is 5.5 mmol/litre according to the tub of dipsticks I'm sitting here holding!

LukeyMasonsMummy · 11/02/2009 08:05

DaisyMooSteiner thank-you for that, so it is only a trace, not higher.. That's ok then I just wasn't sure if the figure was low or high, if it's only low then hopefully it desn't mean anything & my bloods will come back clear.

OP posts:
DaisyMooSteiner · 11/02/2009 08:13

A trace of glucose is unlikely to be significant. Hope you can relax now!
