my friend had this and yes, they did go away after the birth. Not nice when pregnant though - your poor sister.

thanks meep she's crapping herself over the birth as it is (2nd pg) i think that she thinks that it will hurt more because of them being there.

my friend was worried that they mght "burst" or something horrible like that. Both her deliveries (and she had varicous veins both times) went really well with nothing hideous happening at all. She did wear special support tights all day - and had to not stand for too long or all the blood would rush down below. One bit of advice - tell your sis not to have sex !

Hi Candy, yes it does go away after the birth but in the meantime she's gonna be very uncomfortable. I have a similar (although more severe) version of a varicosity 'down there' called an AVM. Some days I am in such pain (35 weeks PG) all I can do is cry! A trip to Asda combined with hormones and a sore mary....not a pretty sight lol

Varicosities in the lips are quite common in pregnancy due to all the extra blood we produce, add that to the weight from a baby etc and you have the makings of some bloody uncomfortable moments!!

I was advised to get some support knickers by my midwife, and also, to wear a thick pad if it gets too bad. Apparently this sort of 'cradles' the fanny area and offers a bit of support and respite. Aside from that, she needs to avoid being on her feet for long periods as gravity is her worst enemy!

I find that at particularly painful times, just laying on my bed with a cold pack between my legs REALLY helps. Not very sexy (massive belly & an assortment of frozen peas / sweetcorn /whatever else is in the freezer down there) but hey, who'm I trying to impress? lol

Tell her she has my full sympathy as a fellow sore fanny sufferer....but its not for much longer!!!

I had an amazing collection of grapes on my fanjo lips with dd. The birth was fine, they don't explode and they do just vanish (though the veins are still fatter but dd only 6.5 weeks). A good thick pad covered in aloe vera gel very soothing. Tell her not to cross her legs and to put her feet up. Pelvic floor exercises are good as they keep the blood flowing.
