I'm thinking about having my anti-natal care at St Mary's - anyone had a baby/anti-natal there? Any views? Do you have to wait ages to see a midwife for appointments? Are the wards really crowded and noisy? Is is clean? Interested in your experience.

i've given birth twice at the whittington, is that far from you?

hoxtonchick · 19/04/2005 15:32

i have had uniformly excellent care at the homerton, it actually has a superb reputation.

hc is right, the only "bad" story i have heard about homerton maternity care is a friend who had twins said a woman opposite her just walked off the ward & never came back for her baby - she was a drug addict..but you can't blame the hospital for that. in fact there was no breastfeeding counsellor at the whittington so i used the one at the homerton

Hoxtonchic/Bundle - I'm not suggesting that anyone else should not go there - it's just not where I would choose for myself, based on my experience of the community midwives. I'm very glad others have had a better experience.

Did think about the Whittington and the Royal Free, but both are just too far to get to from work for regular anti-natal appointments.

shared care with gp?

Just wanted to give the Homerton another thumbs up. I used to live near Kingston, and initially felt very miffed at having given up the opportunity to give birth there to move east to be now husband. I was rather anxious about the Homerton, and was perfectly prepared to pay to go private. BUT...I cannot fault the ante-natal care I have had there. I have shared care with my GP in hackney (also wonderful, she rings me up to ask how I am!) but have had a number of emergency scans, consultant appointments etc. And I can't fault them, efficient, friendly, caring.

I hope this continues through to giving birth - fingers crossed!

Sorry, not helpful to your question re St Mary's. for what it's worth, friends of mine have had mixed experiences there...as have others at C&W for example.
