Do you really need to use maternity pads or will super absorbant sanitry towels do? I seem to remember maternity pads being a bit naff

I used Asda's Own maternity pads straight after they were fairly comfortable but did hurt after a while but this time round am going to try Superdrug's own to start with, mainly because no other shop in my town had any maternity pads when I was packing my hopsital bag!

I was advised to use maternity pads too for the first af after giving birth but found that the pads didn't really absorb very well and weren't long enough so I kept leaking everywhere, so used Always Nighttime (thick ones) they were really comfortable and really absorbant.

Sainsbury's ones (maternity) were good for me. Had c-section so I was soon on the Always whichwere also great, but if you've had stitches not so cushioning. Georgimama is right - you should also get some granny knickers to save your best undies.

Kotex maxi overnight are great for the first week or so. They are soft and cushioned and dont have a dry weave top sheet (avoid with stitche!). They are only 99p for a pack of 10 from Body Care - great price

GYoIsReallyHavingABaby · 11/03/2009 17:30

how many do you really need? Everyone says tonnes so I bought loads but now I think I've gone OTT - i've got about 6 packs of 10 plus some nighttime wings ones if i need to double up.

Slightly paranoid about this for somereason!

Yes, I loved the cushony feeling of the thicker pads, too, so much so that I now wear them all the time for my periods, as I miss that feeling if I wear a thinner pad. Might sound weird but there it is!

PippaFairyFeet · 05/06/2009 09:40

One other thing... Does anyone else get embarrassed allowing their hubby to see their padded panties? I know it's silly but I hate it if he sees me like that and usually try to hide it

TamTam29 · 05/06/2009 12:56

Sainsburys thin maternity pads with wings
or
nightime pads (cant remember what brands i used)

and loads cheap knickers from asda & tescos

With breast pads, I have big boobs & nipples and found only tommee tippee thin & absorbant enough. The other makes showed through my clothing too much

TamTam29 · 05/06/2009 12:59

also forgot to say - in the early days you need at least one an hour so you need a packet a day for the first week probably, poor DH was sent out most days to buy more (and before DS1 he was too embarresed to ever go out to buy toilet rolls!!)

PippaFairyFeet · 05/06/2009 15:46

Hi Tam Tam,

Do you mind if DH sees you in your knickers and pads or do you try and hide it from him?

I should add that I'm not married and only have a fairly new boyfriend.

TamTam29 · 06/06/2009 19:17

Pippafairyfeet, im not in the habit of walking round the house in my pants - tend to wear PJs round the house, and dont think DH would notice anyway (like most men)

Anyways I would think after showing all your bits off to to the world at the hospital, walking round the house in padded pants will become completly normal - well for the first few weeks anyway!

I used a big thick night time towel (tesco or boots own) with a maternity towel on top - extra cushioning!

I also liked disposable pants.

I got through about 10 packs of each.

funtimewincies · 06/06/2009 19:55

I used mattress-type materity for the first couple of days (2, one on top of the other) and they were bliss for a bruised undercarriage.

After that, Always Ultra Nightime.
