I have sat up for last hour in rocking chair trying to sleep upright to no avail. I have nothing in the house I can take for it unless someone knows something natural I can make from the kitchen cupboard (hopeful)it is half 11 and am buggered as haven't been sleeping well lately due to baby getting up to high jinx at night and keeping me awake...suggestions please.....

Milk?

When I had bad heartburn and reflux when pregnant, I could only sleep by resting on one of those huge bean bag cushions (so, in bed, but moreorless sitting up). If you don't have one, could you pile cushions, pillows, blankets, whatever is soft and comfortable, up on the bed and try that?

seeker · 05/02/2009 10:53

Have you got any fresh ginger? If you have, grate some and soak it in boiling water. Then make some ordinary tea with a little sugar (even if you don't usually take it) put some of the strained ginger "juice' in it, then sip it slowly.

DumbledoresGirl · 05/02/2009 10:53

Oh and get some gaviscon or similar tomorrow. It doesn't work completely, but it takes the edge of the problem.

Lionstar · 05/02/2009 10:55

Here are some ideas

Sympathies, I have bad heart burn at the best of times - the only way I can cope when pregnant is practically sleeping with a bottle of Gaviscon.

yawningmonster · 05/02/2009 10:56

Really - buy some ginger next time you go out - it was the only thing that helped me!

Astarte · 05/02/2009 11:36

Gaviscon dual action tablets have been the only things allowing me to sleep and I NEVER medicate unless absolutely essential

sandcastles · 05/02/2009 11:41

YM, I am not sure how soon it can start, but are you sure it is heartburn? Do remedies actually help or not?

Not wishing to scare you, but www.mumsnet.com/Talk/pregnancy/443921-info-on-epigastric-pain-preeclampsia

Also, a friend told me plain white bread is good. You can take Rennie, which I almost lived on with dd2!

KnackeredOfLeeds · 05/02/2009 12:46

I may have the answer.. I had such bad heartburn I was throwing up neat acid at night and in absoloute agony.. I had not slept for over a week and was getting quite hysterical.. I got renitadine from the doctors 1 tablet morning and night and I feel so much better, still get mild heartburn if I eat stupid stuff i.e. 2 cheese& bean pasties from Greggs and a sticky bun, left me with a bit of pain.. But that served me right for being a pig!!. Apparently quite safe for pgnt birds and really did make such a difference. Good luck..

Geepers · 05/02/2009 12:56

Go and buy some Ranitidine (Zantac) from the chemist. It's perfectly safe in pregnancy but if you tell the pharmacist it's for you they may not let you have it, although I was advised by the nurse on NHS Direct to buy it and take it and I was at a very vulnerable point of pregnancy (was 6 weeks).

Also, your doctor may prescribe you omeprazole if you say how bad it is. This drug completely stops stomach acid production and I never get heartburn any more because of it. I took it throughout my last pregnancy with twins, and take it again now.

Nekabu · 05/02/2009 14:03

Someone on here recommended diet pepsi and I now have some small bottles in the fridge for heartburn and so far so good, it has got rid of it.

brettgirl2 · 05/02/2009 17:12

'This drug completely stops stomach acid production' If ONLY!!!!! But then I am a very extreme case (and omeprazole is good, just not that good! haha)

yawningmonster · 06/02/2009 01:52

thanks for all suggestions, the heartburn did calm down after the milk and I didn't need anything else. Sandcastles thanks for your info but pretty sure it was just heartburn as it was very acidy in my throat with loads of acid burbs, no pain under ribs or anything. Have armed myself with some gaviscon and quickeze for tonight if needed. I don't think I got it this early on with ds but am very big this time around.

brettgirl what dosage are you on?

I take 20mg twice a day. Between pregnancies I take a lower dose though.

sandcastles · 07/02/2009 06:27

Ym, that's good. Hope you didn't mind me directing you there, but you cannotbe too careful!

brettgirl2 · 08/02/2009 09:39

I'm on 40 once a day (I find the 40mg capsules work better than 2 20s). Although I have tried to limit to 30 through pg (ie one each day and a half). Now I'm 30 weeks though I'm having to take one every day before I go to bed.

It actually makes me feel better than you're also on 40 each day - I always assume that everyone else is on a lower dose!

brettgirl2 · 08/02/2009 09:40

A consultant did once tell me though that some people take 40mg 4 times a day (although I'm not sure that's in pg!)

PigeonPair · 09/02/2009 21:43

I was prescribed Ranitidene (sp?) by my obstetrician too and it worked wonders.
