I am gearing up to ttc and can't face the terrible morning sickness. Has anyone tried B6 at this level and found it has helped MS? mood? general stickiness of the bean?

It seems to be a very popular at this dosage in the States, but here, not so much.

Any info much appreciated.

Thanks
xx

i spoke to my GP about this, and they said categorically it's dangerous to take this dosage when pregnant...so altho your taking it when ttc, if there's any chance you could then be pregnant, do stop taking it.

Hi there, have a look here for research in to B6 in pregnancy.

I took the following complex called P5P which contains 50mg B6these
and they did help a bit.

I wanted to research it well before I took anything, and spoke to two nutritionists and called BioCare, who make the supplements I took above, and they all said that B6 has a proven track record in pregnancy helping with morning sickness, citing conventional medical research not quack research. My GP didn't object to me taking it either.

Although it seems a high level compared to the RDA, RDA's are set very low for safety.
Rule of thumb in pregnancy is to take as little as you need of any supplement, for the shortest time possible anyway.

The P5P complex also contains zinc which is critical in pregnancy for growth and development and baby takes a lot of that from you.

Hope it helps you, I would always say anything you put in your body, escpecially when preggers, buy the best you can.

p.s. am not qualified in anyway, just take a very keen interest in alternative health.

Hi - I am not a doctor so I suppose what I have to say falls in the category of purely anecdotal/dodgy things you hear on the Internet.

Disclaimer aside, I started taking 100mg B6/daily at about 11 weeks into my 2nd pregnancy, and I had 50-100mg for parts of my 3rd & 4th pregnancies. I'm convinced that it helped in pregnancies 2-3, but it wasn't a cure, I still had some sickness. It didn't seem to help, though, in 4th pregnancy.

What helped most, btw, for me, was identifying trigger foods. For instance, my sickness almost stopped completely in my 4th pregnancy at exactly 13 weeks, as long as I stuck to a limited diet of (wait for it) specific spicy rich foods! By then I had learnt that I seem to develop lactose intolerance early in pregnancy, plus I had a violent reactions to garlic in one pregnancy (but only that one pregnancy). Sometimes you can only find these things out the hard way...

I'm not sure what the risks of B6 are supposed to be in pregnancy, affected DC are now age 1-7 and seem okay so far.

Good luck.

I'm not a doctor.
I took B6 with this pregnancy (from 6-10 wks ish when the morning sickness disappeared) and in my last pregnany (I think until about 12 wks when the sickness went). Both these times my m/s has been much less severe than in my 1st pg when I didn't take it. And out of interest 1st baby was girl, so was 2nd and this one is a boy so not gender related!
No ill effects in DD2 either. In USA it seems normal to take 50-75mg or even up to 100mg according to research I found on the internet. I always just too 50mg with no probs. Good luck.
(by the way I asked my GP before taking it and she shrugged her shoulders, said she had no idea, and if I wanted to know the safe B6 dose to take I should look on the back of a cereal packet......I kid you not!)

frazzledoldbag · 05/02/2009 14:35

Plus I did read as well (when researching prior to this pg) that ginger capsules (can't remember the dose) can be as effective as B6. So I took some of them as well!

Thanks everyone for such detailed responses - seem to have 2 threads going on this thanks to my having posted it twice accidentally. doh.

I don't understand why there seem to be such condlicting views.

I will stock up on the P5Ps. lotster can i just ask, did you take these in addition to a pregnancy supplement or instead of?

I too am very interested in alternative health although know very little about it. I'm going to see a naturopath in Richmond who's apparently excellent with reproductive health. It will be interesting to hear what she has to say too.

Hi again, in addition. (when I could stomach them!) I took Solgar Pre-Natal Nutrients through pregnancy and breastfeeding and am doing the same this time around.

I also took Higher Nature's high purity Omega 3 capsules. Ask your lady about them.

Good luck

Lotster · 05/02/2009 16:18

higher nature

sifuentes · 05/02/2009 16:46

Thanks again. My only fear is that I am a real pansy when it comes to swallowing pills anything bigger than a skittle, so if feeling sick too could all be a bit of a challenge to far. But it clearly is worth a shot.

I used to be too! I drink the water first now and hold it in my mouth whilst popping the pill in and swallow straight down. I think knowing it won't "stick" like it can when you put it in before taking a drink helps me relax!

sifuentes · 05/02/2009 16:52

Great tip! I'll definitely give that a go!
