My friend told me today that their friend is expecting twins conceived a month apart. She conceived one twin but ovulated again the next month and then conceived the second one.

I didn't even think this was possible!!!

Has anyone heard of this or is my has my fiend got the wrong end of the stick?

I know someone who had this happen to them. She was on some pretty weird tablets that really messed her up. One of the twins was early as a result but its not the end of the world.

sorry if being dense here - but couldn't it be one is just under developed? if she's only 12 weeks, isn't it possible one is developing slowly as in the case of twin to twin - where one measures much smaller than the other?

RiaParkinson · 03/02/2009 20:08

I have definitely heard of it

read an article about an english girl who had two little girls this wasy recentl

FairLadyRantALot · 03/02/2009 20:12

just a technicality...but are those Babies even twins then....or "just" siblings...

RiaParkinson · 03/02/2009 20:22

siblings i assume though the womb carrying thing is twin ish - like ivf i suppose

my friend was told she had this due to the difference in size between her twins at the 12 week scan. They thought 3 weeks difference - in the end sadly it turned out that one of the twins had a genetic problem.

I guess the short answer is yes it is totally possible,

CarryOnUpTheLiffey · 03/02/2009 20:27

But an active placenta would release hormones which prevented the ovaries from releasing any eggs...........

I don't understand how this could happen. It could be as a pp said, one twin's development was slower, or twin to twin syndrome.

HeadFairy · 03/02/2009 20:40

The hormone thing is what I can't get my head round carryon... my non implanted miscarried foetal sac gave off enough hormones to stop my periods for three weeks, so how on earth could a properly developing pregnancy not produce enough hormones to stop ovulation. I'm not denying it happens, obviously from the stories something wierd happens, as cargirls says our bodies don't always work in the way they're supposed to.

FairLadyRantALot · 03/02/2009 21:01

yeah, I suppose it is one of those "freak of nature" things....for lack of better term...

HeadFairy · 03/02/2009 21:10

Quirk of nature perhaps?

FairLadyRantALot · 03/02/2009 21:36

yeah, that soubds better...my brain isn't working, if you hadn't noticed already....

This happened to a friend of mine. The twins were born at one birth, but one was obviously premature, and remains significantly smaller than her sister, She also has problems with the enamel on her teeth, and her hair is very sparse. Apparantly this is because when hair and teeth were being formed, it was at the right time for the older twin, who "bagged" mist of the hair and teeth making material going. The younger one is also likely to suffer from osteoporosis for the same reason. Fascinating!

idobelieveinfairies · 04/02/2009 10:36

Mine were born at the same time. twin two was slightly early as she still had the white vernix, no eyebrows etc....def not twin to twin here as boy/girl twins.

EmmaPP · 04/02/2009 21:41

Your friend needs to get any discrepancy in growth checked out ASAP by a hospital scan and a twin specialist, as it could (but isnt necessarily) be a sign that one of the twins isnt growing properly. Our hospital was very slow at picking this up when our twins had a discrepency between the two ages - so do insist on going to a twin specialist unit - her hospital should refer her to one, we went to UCH in london - fetal medicine unit.Good luck.

It's called Superfetation. A very close friend of mine is currently pregnant with twins. One is a month younger than the first. While many cases were debunked its proven to be a real thing. It's very rare in humans, however.
