32 week scan and baby's tummy is very big, have I damaged it by eating too much sugar?

Just had 32 week scan to check that placenta was no longer a bit praevia (turned out to be fine).

Baby's head, legs, etc all normal.

However they scared me by saying it was already 2.4 kg (DS was born at 2.8 kg) and that it would go 'well over ' 3 kg. and also it scared me that the baby's stomach was at one extreme end of the scale. She said it was not abnormal but was big and the baby was 'definitely getting enough food'.

Now I'm totally paranoid I've caused this because in this pregnancy (with a girl) I've really eaten a lot of sweets and chocolate (say the equivalent of at least 1-2 chocolate bars a day). Could I have damaged the baby?

I don't think its possible but not 100% sure
when i was pg with DS2 i was eating 3 big bags of malteasers a day and he weighed 7lb 12oz at birth.
Like i said not 100% sure,im sure there will be someone come along who will be able to give you better advice

Woah there Gemzooks!

So you had a scan - lovely

the placenta has moved - excellent

your baby is growing well and the placenta is providing for all baby's needs - excellent too

nothing abnormal found - even more excellent too!

This is all GOOD news - don't go looking for trouble where there is none! Weight estimation is not an exact art and your doctor or whatever is gifted with second sight - they don't know when baby will arrive or what the weight will be.

As long as your blood sugar is ok - and you've no reason to think it isn't - then you and the baby are fine. Even if during pregnancy your body fails to handle the sugar well you still haven't 'damaged' the baby!

The only thing you will harm with your chocolate are your teeth and your waistline after the birth - and even then it's all fixable.

Just relax - have some chocolate

Northernlurker · 02/02/2009 22:31

'isn't gifted' that should be

ive never heard or seen warnings anywhere against eating too much sugar in pregnancy just the soft cheese /nuts /alcohol etc. sounds unlikely so rest your mind and make a plan to phone your health visitor /midwife tomorrow and ask x

The only craving through both of my pregnancys was sugar. Both DS and DD were good weights, not too big and very healthy. I really don't think you have damaged your baby, try not to worry

hellymelly · 02/02/2009 22:35

I had this both times,in fact the first time I had to be scanned by a specialist as they were worried about the results (her abdomen was off the scale ,but her head on the smaller side of normal) I expected to produce a weeble like baby with a teeny head atop a round tweedledum tummy but she looked totally normal, not particularly podgy, seven pounds nine.I hadn't even thought about my chocolate intake.Yours sounds positively monkish compared with mine!I wouldn't worry about it at all.

LackaDAISYcal · 02/02/2009 22:36

I was getting through a 200g bar of galaxy a day when pregnant with DD, and she was fine and a perfectly average 7lbs 6oz.

Don't worry, I'm sure all is fine and if it weren't then the sonograpgher would have picked it up.

NL speaks sense; guessing the baby's weight in utero is notoriously inaccurate.

I had this too with ds, had growth scans at 32 and 36 weeks due to massive bump and igh blood sugar readings, although I had GTT which was was normal. Ds's head measurements were on the 98th percentile (I expected this we are a big headed family ) his thigh measurements were about the 60th percentile but his belly measurements were really off the scale.

He was born at 38 weeks weighing 9lb 10oz, a little scrumptious chubby I must admit, but otherwise no problems whatsoever (he's now 2 and lost most of his baby chub, but is still the most kissable liitle man).

I had high sugar readings in both urine and blood for both my pregnancies, but negative GTT's for both, so I have no clue what that that means or whether it contributed to ds's greater weight (dd was 7lb 14 oz 1 week overdue).

I have a feeling I may have been borderline diabetic, and may even still be, but I may be wrong.

A sensible diet can't hurt, and if I am lucky enough to fall pg again I will be cutting down on the refined stuff and eating more whole foods, less sugar/fat etc, see if that makes a difference to my pregnancy.

I second northernlurker.................you have had a lovely scan, baby is growing prefectly, and all is great

the estimates for weight are so far out at times they really should not be listened to other than a very wide guestimate!

honestly

they guess the weight of all my five.......

and not one were what they guessed..........each of them were well under by at least 0.5lb.

stop fretting, and start enjoying the rest of your pregnancy with plenty of chocolate

Gemzooks · 03/02/2009 05:38

thanks!

Will try not to worry but will also cut down on refined sugar...

I do often get low blood sugar and get dizzy, sick etc, (always have done) so sugar does affect me quite a lot.. and I have a bloody massive bump, just like last time..

Last time they said my DS was really big around 4 kg, and he was 2.8, so I know not to be too concerned about weight predictions!

I will try to just focus on the lovely baby (girl!!!), you could see her little face very clearly, almost like a portrait!

Oh a girl! Girls are lovely (mother of three girls here)

psychomum5 · 03/02/2009 08:15

mum of three girls too here

plus two boys to keep me from being smug!

nulgirl · 03/02/2009 08:28

3 kg is only about 6 1/2 lbs which still seems pretty small . My dcs were 3.8kg (8lb 7) and 4kg (8lb 15)and are perfectly healthy. I think they only consider it a big baby if it is above either 4kg or 4.5kg.

newmuminwonderland · 06/02/2009 15:08

I had my 20 week scan a few weeks ago, and my baby's belly is on the huge end of the scale too, but no candy bars or much refined sugar here, so it might not be due to that for you. It means that your placenta is functioning well, and the baby is well nourished. My friend's baby girl had a small tummy before birth, they nearly did an early delivery! (Afraid of poorly functioning placenta). Now her tummy is so big (7 months) that she can't fit into trousers! I think that you have nothing to worry about, other than you may have giving your little one a sweet tooth!

I could have written this post myself. I had my 32 week scan on Monday and baby is 2500g estimated weight. Mine has big tummy and head and shortish legs.....I havem't exactly been holding back on the sweets! I've had a GTT and it was negative. Cx
