Which nappies are you buying?

Am not sure if this would be best in the pregnancy or parenting section?

Am wondering which nappies (disposable) you are all using, and which are the best? The only type I have experience with is Pampers active (never found any problems) but they're so expensive compared to other brands, or even other types of pampers nappies!

Do you think it's worth splashing out on this? I want to buy the most comfy option, but surely most are elatively comfy and won't leak while the baby is still newborn and not so mobile etc?

TIA

I never used to buy anything else but pampers but from dc2 once they were toddlers I buy lidl or tesco own brand £5 for big pack40+ nappies I actually think theyre better that pampers never tried on babies though

electra · 30/01/2009 13:49

For a newborn, I found pampers the best disposable nappy for runny bf poo.

chloejessmeg · 30/01/2009 14:46

Tescos nappies (not the value ones) are SO much better than pampers and huggies. You can feel the difference in quality before you even use it. I find huggies crap and just leak and pampers stink of chemicals as soon as they get wet. Also Pampers were the worst for causing nappy rash.

mummy2joshuarileyandbump · 30/01/2009 15:09

I agree with chloe, I used pretty much every brand going and found Tesco's and Boots own brands. Cheap and cheerful

If I use anything other than Huggies Natural Fit my daughter gets a dreadful rash. I agree about the expense though. I used a Costco nappy once and it seemed to be really good but they're only available in such large amounts that I've nver bought them in case DD outgrew them before I used them.

Sunflower100 · 30/01/2009 16:49

Asda ones good.

Tangle · 30/01/2009 17:33

I'd buy a small pack of all the types you think you might like and see which one work for your DC. As DD has grown she'd suddenly switch from Huggies to Pampers, or vice versa. A newborn may not be mobile but fit is still really important - BF baby poo has a high squirt factor!

I have a friend that used Sainsbury's own, but decided it was a false economy and switched to Pampers.

Another friend was always a Pampers girl, but her 3rd just didn't fit them at all.

n5rje · 30/01/2009 17:37

I've always found the Tesco and Boots ones to be absolutely fine (4 dcs) and you use them so quickly that the extra cost of a branded one can soon add up to quite a difference

fufflebum · 30/01/2009 17:50

moltex excellent and no wee smell!

Expensive though but better for environment without hassle of laundering....

WorzselMummage · 30/01/2009 18:04

Tesco nappies are fab

I always found pampers and huggies rubbish, huggies especially.

Aldi nappies are good too.

BabyBaby123 · 30/01/2009 18:15

i've bought Sainsburys for this baby. Used Huggies/Pampers for my first and didn't rate them at all, my second was allergic to Pampers so I quickly switched to Sainsburys/Tesco, this time I'm starting off with Sainsburys or whatever other own brand is on offer - Pamper/Huggies are over rated and over priced imo

firstontheway · 30/01/2009 18:23

Ooooh interesting, thanks!

Okay so general consensus is that own brand tend to be okay, but if you have a projectile pooer, may need to switch? Think I'll buy a small pack of Tesco, Asda (we have an asda so close so am hoping these are good! and pampers, then experiment.

I'd also not get too many size 1's - DD was 9lb 12 and was into size 2's within a week or 2...

lou031205 · 30/01/2009 23:15

I think you need to buy one set and then see how you go.

DD1 would get a sore bum in anything other than Pampers/Huggies, right up until she was out of nappies.

DD2 is fine in any nappy we have tried, so we get her Asda Little Angels, which work out to be less than half the price.

mummytopebs · 30/01/2009 23:21

The best nappies by far i have ever used are aldis called mamia they are about a fiver for 68 and they are excellent, my dd has probs with her bowels and they have even withstood picolax!

onadietcokebreak · 30/01/2009 23:25

Aldi mamia get my vote but never tried my DS in them when newborn.

Tesco own (yellow packet) were fab when newborn.

Asda own nappies always gave several friends baby a rash.

mummytopebs · 30/01/2009 23:34

I didnt like asda ones thought the crystals tended to come out even when quite dry

Qally · 30/01/2009 23:41

Before DS arrived I bought Huggies, Pampers and Tescos to do a test run. He got rashes with all of them, so I bought Nature Boy & Girl ones, which are the same price (I don't run to Moltex). Nappy rash vanished. We tried using the conventional ones up after a couple of weeks in case he'd be better, but same thing happened. We ended up donating the leftover others to a feeding clinic.

I think the eco-credentials are a bit thin - they still have a gel core - but the non-bleached outer corn husk or whatever it is suits him really well, and they have good soaking/poo-holding qualities, so we've stuck with them. They cost more than Tesco own brand, but same as branded, and Sainsbury's often do special offers on them.

Tangle · 31/01/2009 10:44

The other thing I read about the biodegradable ones is that biodegradable waste in landfill = a lot of methane that needs to be handled. To make them a really environmentally friendly option they need to be composted.

That said, putting fewer chemicals next to a newborn baby's skin always seems like a good idea - I just never really got on with the Nature Boy & Girl ones.
