Is there a lentilly weavery way I can control hyperemesis?

I'm 7+1 wks pg and have been dx'ed with hyperemesis today.

None of the traditional remedies work, ginger, peppermint, sea bands, eating little and often, etc etc etc

I am sick 5+ times a day and can't even keep water down until mid afternoon. I've lost about 10 lbs in the past two weeks which admittedly I can afford to lose but is obv not ideal.

I am running on empty, bordering on dehydration, arms and legs feel like lead, I'm finding it difficult to concentrate (esp when driving) and am very weepy.

In desperation I went to the GP today and have been prescribed an antiemetic, I don't have them yet as the pharmacy will have to order them in so I'll be able to pick them up tomorrow. Unfortunately due to pregnabrainscramble I can't remember which ones tehy are.

Is there ANYTHING else I can do? I wanted to avoid drugs but if the alternative is to end up in hospital on a drip then I dunno... I'm almost wondering if it would be preferable to be on a drip than to take drugs but then it's only a temporary fix and as soon as the drip came off I'd be back to square one wouldn't I?

I have a 4yo who is getting very distressed because I have been so ill and haven't been able to do all my usual mummy stuff due to the constant nature of this. I need to think of her too, if I end up hospitalised then she will be beside herself.

Any advice would be very gratefully received. Thanks.

Bikerunski - At 15 weeks I was in hospital. You're lucky you kept any food down. I am 18+5 weeks and still suffering, I just hope mine goes away like yours did, but have got a feeling I've got this til the end x

minouminou · 05/02/2009 22:58

Hey....have you tried ginger biscuits?
Ducks and runs.............
splitting the anti-emetics in half is a great idea. I had a dissolvable type, which lasted for 2-3 hours, tucked under your top lip
what i'd do sometimes is let it rest for a while, then take it out and let it dry off, before using it again later on
that way i wasn't getting so zapped-out, because they do make you feel weird, but sometimes it's the lesser of 2 evils.

Lubyloo · 05/02/2009 23:04

Sorry to hear you are suffering so badly. It must be horrendous.

Hypnosis can be very effective for HG. If you google HG and hypnosis you will find quite a lot of info to support it.

bellybaba · 06/02/2009 18:55

Hi tigerfeet, sorry to hear you've been so sick in your pregnancy. Was it stemitil they prescribed or something similar? definitely take them. It won't harm baby at all.
Alternatively I agree with some of the other ladies. Acupuncture or how about cranial osteopathy? or a combination of this?
Ginger doesn't always work on everyone as it actually depends on whether you are a warm or cold person and other physical problems a person might have or not.
I hope this stage will pass for you quickly.

brettgirl2 · 06/02/2009 19:24

Do ginger biscuits/ginger ale actually work for anyone. This was suggested by my GP - but it clearly didn't work for her either, because she then said that she was hospitalised

minouminou · 06/02/2009 21:16

Brettgirl - for regular queasiness and occasional chucking, then ginger can work a treat, but with HG - sometimes you even throw up on full-on medication
You can use it in conjunction with anti-emetics, as it's quite soothing, but it won't help HG on its own

monkeybumsmum · 06/02/2009 21:18

Never worked for me brettgirl, never heard of them having worked for anyone else either. Wonder why it's the first thing people suggest

I had HG with ds and then with my last pregnancy which ended at 12 weeks. Although absolutely devastated there was a very slight sense of relief that I didn't feel sick any more

For ds I literally lay there all day thinking I was going to die, in between throwing up. For the last pg I was a bit like Hayley - found myself having to stick to (trying to) eat exactly the same things at exactly the same time each day. Afterwards I would lie still and hoped it stayed down.

It is just hell to go through, I really feel for you TF. Just try to get through each day, and don't think further than that. As for being hospitalised, the drip only gave a certain amount of relief, and the sickness flooded back when I came off it.

Good luck, and hope the meds carry on helping x

I know - and they always deliver this advice as if it's the sermon on the mount, eh?
raw grated ginger, ginger beer, ginger powder or crystallised, but biscuits? They don't contain enough of the stuff.
I'm 30 weeks now, and am chucking once or twice a week, and only need to use an anti-emetic once a week or so - but i think the fact that it's JUST....GONE....ON....SO....LOOOOOOOOOONG has finaly made the ginger nuts brigade think it's a bit beyond biscuits
Bit too late though - they shoulda shoved their biccies where the sun don't shine 20-odd weeks ago!

brettgirl2 · 08/02/2009 09:33

I didn't have hg, just normal nausea/queasyness - ginger made me heave!!! I wasn't suggesting I thought it would be effective for severe MS, just wondering if there was anyone who had foung it helpful at all.

monkeybumsmum · 08/02/2009 09:40

I would like to know that too brettgirl
Maybe it's the sugar in the biscuits that makes them not help? Sugar always made me feel sooooo much worse!

brettgirl2 · 08/02/2009 09:46

Yes, sugar definitely made mine worse too. I think it would have to be raw ginger for it to be enough to be effective - when you can only eat breaded cod and baked beans, or pizza the week after, however I'm not sure how you are meant to get it down.

My doctor told me to drink ginger ale - there is hardly any in it and it made me feel really sick.

Even worse my DH (unprompted by me) started trying to feed me bloody ginger biscuits on advice from his mother.

TsarChasm · 08/02/2009 09:59

It's HORRIBLE isn't it? I had it v v badly and have so much sympathy

Do you find you are supersensitive to smells. Nasty ones anre magnified, ones you used to like make you retch and as for food smell..sorry for even mentioning them.

I found that the smell of fresh cut lemons and lemony things around me helped a little bit though.

Also I read this book (Note the lemon on the cover )

I also tried Morning Well which is a cd of funny sounds which supposedly help. I don't think it did much though but some people say it works. (I gave it to someone on here some time ago)

I really hope you feel better soon. I also had a little one to look after whilst all this was going on. It was so so difficult. I could barely walk past the kitchen door let alone go in there and cook for her or anyone.

Keep sipping fluids too. Dehydration is not good and can make you feel worse.

TsarChasm · 08/02/2009 10:02

Btw it was twins with me but my friend had this badly too and she had a single baby, so not always more than one.

becstarlitsea · 08/02/2009 10:05

Argh! Brings back horrible memories - MIL suggested ginger to me, and kept saying 'It really works!' Then when I'd been in hospital on drip 'Why didn't you try the ginger biscuits like I said?"

Becs through gritted teeth: I did try them. They were effective only in so far as that they made my vomit taste slightly of ginger. OKAY?

So much sympathy TigerFeet. I'm normally a lentil-weaver type myself but when it comes to HG I reckon the best advice is:-

Bring on the drugs! Lots and lots of drugs! And if those drugs don't work - bring on some better drugs!

TigerFeet · 08/02/2009 10:07

BLimey I had no idea that this thread was still running - it had fallen off my threads I'm on page!

Thanks so much for all the empathy and advice.

I've had a reasonably good week, throwing up anything between once and maybe three times a day which is a huge improvement. I'm feeling rough today though. It seems to come and go.

I'm managing to stay hydrated though which I know is the most important thing.

I need to get moving though, the house is disgusting and we have a babysitter coming tomorrow evening as it's Parents' Evening for dd. THere's no way I could let anyone over my threshold atm . DH has been brilliant but for the last week or so he's been ill himself so the housework has slid somewhat.

That's utterly ridiculous that she really thought a few ginger nuts could keep you out of hospital.

The ginger vomit has actually made me feel quite nauseous.... and I left ms behind a while ago now!

TigerFeet · 08/02/2009 10:13

Oh please... no more talk of ginger vomit

What is is about ginger in particular? Do people really think that we would rather end up in hospital than try ginger? Makes me v cross.

brettgirl2 · 08/02/2009 10:14

How are you feeling now?

TigerFeet · 08/02/2009 10:18

I'm not too bad thanks, the tablets work reasonably well but I still feel sick most of the time. I'm managing to keep more down though which is great.

brettgirl2 · 08/02/2009 10:20

That's good ish to hear. Feeling sick all the time, even if you can keep some stuff down is just the absolute pits though. Just take it easy and ignore anyone who tells you it is 'mind over matter'

rooloo · 17/03/2009 20:11

hey there,

am 8wks preg with my 3rd HG baby,

had HG with my 2 girls from 5wk-birth..took medication throughout till the day they were born. Hasnt seemed to have done them any harm.

you must keep hydrated, and if that means going into hosp then you need to, the longer you leave it the longer you need in hosp.

spent 16weeks in hosp with my first...not so bad with 2nd.

there are loads of antiemetics out there, so find one that suits you with the advice of your doc of course

remember we only carry these little darlings for 9mths...it wont last forever!

keep your chin up x
