Hello everyone,

This is my first pregnancy (I'm 9 weeks) and I have a few worries which are making me really stressed and anxious, so I was wondering if you had any advice!

Firstly, I wondered how long it would be before the midwife contacts you? I went to the doctors over a week ago and got a maternity pack and filled out a midwife form thingy, which said that the midwife would be in contact. But I've heard nothing yet, so was wondering how long this normally takes?

Also, whilst I didn't know I was pregnant, I drank alcohol. As soon as I found out I was pregnant, I stopped immediately and wouldn't now, but during that time I didn't know, I drank quite a lot as it was Christmas and New Year. Now I am being scared stiff by all of these internet articles on 'Fetal Alcohol Syndrome' and I am worried sick that I have damaged the baby.

Anyway, any advice would be greatly apreciated!

In other news, I had my first bout of 'morning sickness' at ten o clock last night!

Thanks everyone.

Hi

Congrats on your pregnancy. My midwife didn't contact me until about 11/12 weeks (but that was before they introduced scans at 12 weeks). I would contact your midwife team and ask when they are likey to arrange your first appointment.

I really wouldn't worry too much about the alcohol. I know loads of people who drank heavily without realising they were pregnant but just be sensible from now on.

My bouts of "morning" sickness also used to happen at night, usually a couple of hours after eating dinner.

Around here the policy is a booking in appt. for 12 weeks. However I agree with others that you should perhaps phone around 10 weeks just to make sure the info has transferred and possibly book yourself in. I presumed they would phone me and waited, when finally phoned them in frustration, they were suprised as I should have made the appt sooner?!? Also, they often have a waiting list of a couple of weeks so worth phoning about week 10 for a 12 week appt.

Like others have said do not worry about the alcohol! You did not know and loads and loads of us have done exactly that. The important thing is that you have stopped now

Try not to google too much would be my advice to you too. We have all done it and googled symptoms only to worry ourselves stupid over something not even slightly relevant. I had slightly odd pains in the left of my stomach a while ago, googled and worried myself silly I had pancreatitis or acute liver failure!! If you want common sense advice about pregnancy, best bet is to ask a friend who has been pregnant recently or somewhere like mumsnet. Fast, reliable and honest opinions from people in the same position as you.

Good luck with the pregnancy - do not worry alone, ask and you will receive support and advice xx

Congratulations Mishymoo , my midwife didn't contact me at all, in my area we have to telephone the hospital where the scan is to take place and book the date for your 12 week scan. I didn't see my midwife then until 17 weeks pregnant and then only once a month after that.

For morning/evening/all day sickness, I used to nibble on Rich Tea biscuits and sniff lemons! Oh, and if you're not already feeling absolutely shattered with no energy at all, expect it to hit you soon, you'll feel loads better after 12 weeks! I've just had my 5th baby .
