I have one according to the hospital I have had 6 pg before and never had this ,I am 22 weeks and just a little worried.
They are going to rescan me at 34 weeks and again at 36 if it has not moved it will obv be a section .
I am feeling a little concerned my other births have all been NVD it is just playing on my mind a bit.

Do not waste valuable energy on fretting yet. Low lying placenta at your stage in pregnancy may well mean nothing: as the womb stretches upwards the placenta often gets "pulled up" with it and thereby clears the inner opening of the cervix. Were the lower end of the placenta is at the rescan later on is much more significant.

I had placenta preavia (as it is also known) with DS2 and we only found out about it when I bled quite heavily at 25 weeks and was almost delivered that night. To cut rather long story short, he was eventually delivered by ECS at 31 weeks and is absolutely fine (now almost 5 yrs).

If late in the pregnancy the placenta is still lying very low, you will certainly be monitored v closely, you may (I say, may) require to have a CS and you absolutely MUST seek medical advice if you have ANY bleeding at all.

Sorry, do not mean to scare you!! Really, my best advice is, do not worry too far ahead. Have you had any previous CSs? This increases risk of PP. At least you and those looking after you know to keep monitoring you and who knows, it can so still change.

Very best of luck!!

i'm out the other side now. won't repeat the story again but search me in the pregnancy threads over last couple of months and I've told it on similar threads.

be glad that you have been diagnosed early - it can be quite common with more pregancies. take it easy, no heavy lifting etc, need to be watching for bleeds. found that they treat 2nd trimester bleeds very differently (all matter of fact, no worries)to 3rd trimester bleeds (very dangerous, you'll putting everything at risk if you leave your bed is the approach i got).

be prepared for overnight stays in hospital and in 3rd trimester could be in hosp till delivery. any bleeding and you'll be given steriods to strengthen baby's lungs, just in case. trying not to scare you, actually the worst bit is really being told you have to stay in the hospital rather than the bleeding or the csection.

With DD, I had low lying placenta. Was re scanned at 36, 38 weeks and it finally moved.

Really, do not worry. It will most likely move and 22 weeks is really early.

Mummyfor3 · 26/01/2009 21:24

Yep, what twinklytoes said.

I was in hospital for 5 weeks before delivery and had to be moved 3x during bleeds as delivery threatened and there were no ITU cots available at my hospital at the time. Because of moves I have had contact with several consultants and, believe you me, like with lots of other things, there are LOTS of different opinions out there how to manage this condition: from strict bed rest (including bed pans ), to being allowed to walk to bathroom/along the corridor/to dayroom/to hopsital library (t'tinternet kept me sane). One rather maverick (has national rep) consultant even felt I could have been managed at home ...

Anyway, you do not even know that you have it, so do not fret.

twinklytoes · 26/01/2009 21:25

sazzles - i went in at 33wks with a bleed and a cs was booked for 38wks and I was told I was staying put. had another bleed at 35wk5 and ds was born, so only did 3wks but it was the longest time ever, especially having to share a bay with newborns every night.

comewhine - don't worry. we were unlucky there are so many more threads saying placenta has moved after 20wk scan.

ComeWhineWithMe · 26/01/2009 21:26

I have had 6 dc but we lost dd1 when she was 5 weeks old ,so I have 5 living children right now and bump of course .

if the midwife told you not to worry, the best thing you can do is try to follow orders! that's a hard task i know - i was told i had a low lying placenta at 20 weeks (am now 27 weeks).

provided there's no bleeding, problems, etc between now and then, i have another scan at 32 weeks - i think it's usual for them to re-scan at 32 / 34 weeks to check how things look.

did the sonographer tell you, or do your 20 week scan notes tell you, to what extent the placenta is near / covering the cervix? i.e. is it partially covering, or is it a particular measurement from the cervix?

unless it's totally covering the cervix (or the os as i think it's called) then i believe there's a really good chance it'll move by your next scan.

(mine, on the other hand, is / was unfortunately totally covering the os / cervix - but the sonographer made a point of saying that this was a bit more rare, and hence a bit less likely to move, than most low lying placentas).

good luck and hopefully yours will move just fine. (who knows, mine might even move too...)

a x

Mummyfor3 · 26/01/2009 21:31

for DD1. Sorry, did not mean to pry, just the wording... I have had 3DSs and 4 (early) miscarriages. Cannot imagine to lose DC one has actually met .

Soooo: lots of positive vibes in your and bumps' direction .

ComeWhineWithMe · 26/01/2009 21:43

annaday The MW told me at a check up the consultant had been called away at my scan the week before so it did not get explained to me fully ,it is not fully covering I don't think it can until 28 weeks from what the MW said it is just lower down than usually ,I just hope it moves I know it sounds daft but since I was told I am very aware of my placenta whereas in other pg's I hardly gave it a thought TBH.

Mummyfor3 No worries it happened over 10 years ago now while still hard it gets easiar ,MC are also terrible and just as much as a loss to the person carrying the baby IMO I am sorry for your losses too .

Thanks for everyones advice I do feel ok about it just a bit ,It is a bit of a shock to have 6 almost problem free PG then have a glitch in this one .

Am 22wks. Was told at my 20wk scan that had low lying placenta but not to what extent. Scan booked for 33wks (should be 32 but it's Easter)then will keep checking if not moved before resorting to CS. She did say 9 out of 10 move but on here all the stories are of it not moving. Am hoping the little wriggler might shift it. Am most worried about the thought of extra time in hospital or post CS recovery as have DD age 2.

Is SazzlesA right re rumpy pumpy being a bit dangerous for causing bleeds?

ceedub · 29/01/2009 14:20

Hi,

I had a low-lying placenta at my 21 week scan. I was also told that in the overwhelming majority of cases, the placenta moves away from the cervix as the uterus expands, and that I really shouldn't worry about it.

I'm now 35 + 3 and will go for my scan to check it's moved on Monday. I've been told to expect that everything will be fine for a normal delivery, but that if it hasn't moved, the worst I should expect will be that I'll have to have a caesarean.

I've also been told that there is a world of difference between a low-lying placenta and placenta praevia. The latter is where the placenta is wholly or partly covering the cervix and can be more prone to causing bleeds during pregnancy (due to pressure from the baby) and if the placenta hasn't moved by 36 weeks or thereabouts, it would certainly mean a c-section.

However, low-lying can just mean the placenta is a bit close to the cervix at 21 weeks for comfort - in my case, it was 1.5cm, with the hospital preferring a 2cm gap for vaginal birth. So it's worth checking just how 'low-lying' your placenta is.

The main issue is to ensure you report any bleeding immediately to the hospital - they'll want you to come in straight away to check it's nothing serious. I had some bleeding around 26 weeks - turned out to be totally unrelated.

When I first found out about this, I worried terribly, but the reality is that it's very common and will almost certainly resolve itself.

Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy, and try not to fret. I'll try to remember to post on Monday with the results of my scan - here's hoping I get the all-clear!

ceedub · 29/01/2009 14:22

oh, NCT73 - having low-lying placenta hasn't put DP and I off in the slightest and hasn't caused any bleeding

PinkTulips · 29/01/2009 14:25

all 3 of my pregs i had a low lying placenta until well after 20 weeks. they rescanned me at 3odd weeks and it had moved every time.

don't panic yet, there's still every chance it'll shift before it becomes and issue.

ceedub · 05/02/2009 18:09

hiya, just popping in to update on 36-week scan. Placenta has moved well away from the cervix and is now 'high anterior' - so nothing to worry about.

Apparently this happens in most cases, so hopefully will be the case for you

nct73 · 21/04/2009 21:29

Just wanted to update that placenta has moved nicely and exit route is all clear. Was a bit worried that would still need CS as had been lying breech but has also turned so good news all round. Wanted to share as when started searching threads when I found out had this most of the posts were about negative experiences.

Cazzaben · 24/04/2009 22:26

Have been reading and waiting to hear on your news!! I'm so chuffed for you (I spent 3 months in hospital with an anterior Major Placenta Preavia) I have been reluctant to post as I didnt want to frighten you with my stories...

Hope the rest of your pregnancy goes well...

Again im sooo pleased for you that the exit is all clear!!! xxx
