Dropdeadfred · 26/01/2009 16:54

that is amazingly early...i don't want to be rude..but are you sure? i thought you couldn't hear it until at least 9 weeks...?

congratulations anyway!!

SobranieCocktail · 26/01/2009 17:00

Yes definitely sure (I've used it for two previous pregnancies). BTW tis me, MadamAnt, and as you can tell the doppler situation has been resolved, so I won't be begging you for your doppler. Thank you so much again for your offer...it was really nice knowing I had a "safety net"

you have your own one to listen? can I ask why...?

arena · 26/01/2009 17:02

Im thinking of buying one to, can't make my mind up of which one to buy.

Which one do you have, and congratulations!!!.

SobranieCocktail · 26/01/2009 17:03

dinny - reassurance and fun!

arena - I got mine from babybeats But I've heard that the AngelSounds dopplers also do the job well, and are much cheaper.

VJay · 26/01/2009 17:05

Where did you get it from?

wannaBe · 26/01/2009 17:08

have always thought these women that buy dopplers of their own are quite mad. sorry.

Pregnancy can be stressful enough without adding to it if you can't find the heartbeat...

SobranieCocktail · 26/01/2009 17:13

wannabe - I've only ever found mine a source of reassurance. It would be a dull old world if we were all the same though, wouldn't it?

belgo · 26/01/2009 17:15

I was told by my sonographer that they don't like to listen to the baby's heartbeat at this early stage because the baby may not like it, and this is such a vulnerable stage of pregnancy.

VJay · 26/01/2009 17:16

I suppose it's each to there own. wannabe. I spoke to dh about it and he agreed with what you say. After 2 mcs I'm desperate for reassurance, but if I couldn't find a hb then I would be even more stressed.
Good luck sobranie xx

wannaBe · 26/01/2009 17:18

I just think it's a way for someone (whoever it is that sells these machines) to exploit expectant mothers, because they know that a lot of them will be desparate to listen to their baby's heartbeat regularly. But especially in early pregnancy the heartbeat is very difficult to find, and I imagine that more parents feel anxious than don't if they can't find it.

What will be next - a portable ultrasound?

wannabe - I'm sure portable ultrasounds do exist.

A student doctor found it hard to find my baby's heart beat at 15 weeks, even thought I felt the baby twice kick the doppler

RiaParkinson · 26/01/2009 17:21

congratulations cocktail and fwiw i have heard 7 week heartbeats with 2 babies now !

reikizen · 26/01/2009 17:24

I'm amazed you can hear it so early, I'd put my money on it being yours tbh. Not only is the fetus very small, your uterus is tucked well behind your pelvis until at least 12 weeks when it it just palpable over the top. My main worry about these home doppler things is false reassurance, your heartbeat can be very fast at times, making it sound like a baby. But, if it makes you happy (as Sheryl Crowe once said)

Nemoandthefishes · 26/01/2009 17:26

If you are going to uy a doppler then get one with a LCD display as it will show heart rates so you can e sure what is yours and what is the baby.

RiaParkinson · 26/01/2009 17:27

no - i heard it it was 160-180 bpm

i would not be laughing if mine were that

plus it only registers very low in pelvis a this stage

I believe you madameant!

SobranieCocktail · 26/01/2009 17:35

Honestly, it was definitely mine. It was approx 110 bpm, and I could also hear my heartbeat which was about 70 bpm. I was able to hear my other two DCs earlyish (9 weeks, but I didn't actually try before then).

Belgo - I wonder if he/she had the same reservations about ultrasound scans? Either way, I only listened for less than a minute, and probably won;t try again for at least another week. Any risk must be vanishingly small. (And obviously I don't believe there is a risk at all, otherwise I wouldn't do it!)

Wannabe - a mate of mine is a vet, and he often scanned his pregnant with with the portable veterinary ultrasound

SobranieCocktail · 26/01/2009 17:37

Sorry - I meant 130 bpm!

oooo I would love a portable ultrasound machine!

Surely, as with anything, it depends on how and who's using it? I have been lent a really good one which would be v.expensive to buy new. I mangaed to find the heartbeat all by myself for the first time about... ahem... 8 weeks ago. When I was 26 weeks!

Frankly, I think I'm just too fat to find it myself! But midwife managed from 14 weeks. It never worried me that I couldn't find it, just depends on how you take things I suppose. Even now when I try, it's very hit and miss, but then she's kicking the bajesus out of me at the moment so it hardly matters!

theresonlyme · 26/01/2009 18:20

belgo I think you need to say that again.

belgo · 26/01/2009 18:39

what do I need to say again?

BabyBaby123 · 26/01/2009 18:42

you were probably picking up something else - 7.5 weeks is impossible, do you know how small how an embryo is at that stage??

theresonlyme · 26/01/2009 18:45

Belgo this

was told by my sonographer that they don't like to listen to the baby's heartbeat at this early stage because the baby may not like it, and this is such a vulnerable stage of pregnancy.
