Had my first appointment this morning. I was clearly looking peaky (morning sickness, anxiety due to previous mcs).

She didn't smile once. Didn't ask me how I was. Didn't to any small talk whatsoever.

Just filled in forms and tried 3 times to get a vein.

I am quite upset and not at all looking forward to seeing her again. She's very young and has the people skills of a potato.

Is there anything I can do?

you can request a different midwife.

Who would I need to talk to about that? She's the only one who comes to my local surgery - I'm guessing I'd need to see one at the hospital instead?

Write to the Supervisor of Midwives at you local hospital - etails should be on the trust's website. They are usually very cooperative. I requested a CMW that I like (from a previous pregnancy) so she visits me at home.

Thanks I will do. I just hope she's not on duty when I'm in labour!

If she is on duty when you are in labour you can ask for another MW - I did as I had an awful MW and point blank refused to let her anywhere near me.

You need someone you can feel at ease with.

What *joyfulsyes8 said - I did this because my midwifr sounded about as good as yours (even down to the "can't find a vein" routine.)

I ended up with a fantastic midwife - just wished I'd done it sooner in the pregnancy.

Hi, most hopitalss hvee different midwives on thee labour nd post natal wards. They usually have a different team for the community.
As for not getting what you think you need from the midwife, if it is the same then contact the head of Midwifery at your local hospital and ask for the Head of Community for your area and ask for a different one to take over your care.
Don't take things personally 'you may be the target but certanily not the reason' everyone has these moments. But you are entitled to the care you expect you should be recieving.

I never saw the same midwife twice when I was pregnant, so fingers cross !

Btw it was not because I did want to change! it was a team of midwifes and I just happened to get a different one everytime I had a check up!

mrsgboring · 22/01/2009 14:40

Well I personally wouldn't change midwives over this, though it was a rubbish appointment for sure. Maybe she is in the early stages of pg herself and feels like crap?

Picante · 22/01/2009 14:42

My friend has seen her as well and thought the same. I've left a message with the district midwife at the hospital. Sorry but I'm going to put myself first here!
