Confused: What to buy for a summer baby?

Hi all

Baby Myneaux is due 1st June and I have just started to do the fun bit (shopping !).

But one thing is really bothering me (can you tell Im a first timer?). How on earth can you tell if your baby is too hot or too cold?

I am toying with the idea of buying sleeping bags for the moses basket but Im worried that they will be too hot....and should I be buying things with sleeves and legs (sleepsuits) ..or short sleeved bodysuits?

and will I need hats? (my grandma insists babies need hats on all the time so that their ears dont stick out....but she is 88 and I suspect this is no longer true !!

sorry if these are really daft questions but its very confusing !

hello,
I had same worries - ds1 was born in a heat wave and I stressed that his room was no where near the 'ideal' 17 deg (more like 23/24 deg) and ds2 was born at christmas so I had to work out what he was supposed to wear to keep warm - imo summer babies are easier as less dressing and undressing when you go in and out of shops etc

no 3 is now due 18th June so wondering what I'll need this time round

I'd say basically don't buy too much - you'll need vests regardless (to make layers or just to put them in) its nice to have some patterned ones if v hot summer and its all they are wearing so if you know whether you're having a blue or pink one get some
check when baby can go in sleeping bag as I think there is a weight/size recommendation, mine didn't use them till about 8wks so plenty of time to get them too
you prob need at least one hat - babies lose most heat from top of head and lets be honest last couple of summers where rubbish

hth - don't worry you'll be fine and remember people will prob buy you loads of stuff x

You will need sleepsuits. remember you will be up in teh night for feeds and early June can be quite chilly in the small hours!!

DS1 was born a few days before the hottest day ever during summer 2006. I asked the MW about overheating and she said that in those temperatures, just a vest would be sufficient! She actually said that people always go on about not letting babies get too cold but there is no advice anywhere of what to do when it is too hot!

As for sleeping you can get 1.0 tog (or even 0.5 tog) sleeping bags which we used and just dress the baby in a vest on really warm nights (if we get any this year of course )
What I did find invaluable were some little short romper suits like this- plus DS1 looked so so cute in them!

DS2, on the other hand, was born 9 weeks ago so is the complete opposite and that threw me! Lots of layers, takes forever to get out of the house by the time I have bundled him up in a snowsuit/hat/gloves etc....summer babies are SO much easier!!

Same here - I think layers are the key. Start off with some vests and add cardigans, etc!

Myneaux · 21/01/2009 14:24

Thank you everyone...and love the romper suits !

These days they say you should never put a hat on a baby indoors.

mum4ever · 21/01/2009 16:56

I think houses are a lot warmer today than they would have been in Grandmas days!

You might need one for out and about tho' if the summer is anything like last year.

LadyOfWaffle · 21/01/2009 17:03

Just think layers. DS1 was born March 2006 so spend that summer in mainly a nappy! Buy vest suits, short sleeved body suits, long sleeves body suits and sleepsuits and just layer up and down. Go by their chest temp, sometimes they can have slightly cold hands but be OK.

Pinkbump3 · 21/01/2009 17:05

I would just think of clothes in terms of layers for summer baby or winter baby and you cant go wrong. If its really hot a vest/short cuff romper suit or for mild wear babygro and cardi. always have a spare blanket in case its too cold. Remember that even though summer days are hot sometimes the nights are quite chilly.
Layers are prob best bet as you can take off and put on!

mogwai · 21/01/2009 20:28

you know what are dead useful? Those long baby nighties with elastic around the bottom. Brilliant - no poppers to fiddle with during night time nappy changes. Air circulates around the legs yet they still have long sleeves.

I had July baby and they were amazing.

chandellina · 21/01/2009 21:17

DS was born in 30 degree weather (in July) yet we were not allowed out of hospital until we put a sleepsuit over his vest and got a hat on him! so silly.
love those elastic bottom things too but DS hated them unless he still had enough room to flail around.

MrsBadger · 21/01/2009 21:44

vests and sleepsuits

no baby needs anything else for at least 3m

xxhunnyxx · 21/01/2009 22:32

Don't they say that you should put an extra layer on babies than you would wear yourself?

I'm a first timer too and baby is due in July but not thought about clothes in too much detail, just planning on gettin the basics..vests, sleepsuits etc and letting friends and family buy me all the cute clothes once baby is born.
