Recurrent miscarriage, antiphospholipid antibodies aspirin & heparin treatment

1st timer although I have searched the archives for information before asking you all...

I have had 4 early miscarriages (9 weeks and under) and an ectopic pregnancy. I have been diagnosed as having antiphospholipid antibodies and was told that in my next pregnancy (the 5th one which I lost last Thursday) that I would be treated with aspirin and heparin. This tallies with evidence based practice. I know that aspirin is started as soon as there is a positive test. What I cannot find out is when the heparin should be started. If you have had this treatment I would be eternally grateful if you could tell me when your consultant started the heparin injections.

The legendary Prof Regan's clinic starts the heparin as soon as a pregnancy is seen on a scan at 5-6 weeks. Does this fit with your experience?

Many, many thanks for your help

Can't speak from personal experience, but have carried out the heparin injections on a patient..... as soon as pregnancy confirmed. As I remember it (2003)the lady had a successful pregnancy.

Thanks Sawyer64. That very much tallies with what I found in the evidence base (I'm a health librarian). Hard to locate anything concrete though. My consultant's policy is to start heparin at 12 weeks which is not evidence-based practice as far as I'm concerned. Looking forward to taking this up with him soon...

Thanks again
