Nuchal translucency test - test results: what do they mean?

Hello I just had my 3 month scan this afternoon and am panicking because the person doing the scan said "I'm not going to discuss the nuchal fold results with you because you need to have the blood test, we need to look at both of them together" which makes me worry bec surely if it was fine she would have given us an indication?

Anyway, does anybody know what the 'normal' rates are? We had a crown rump length of 74.0mm and a nuchal translucency of 1.9mm - I've been googling and came across something about high risk of congenital heart defects having an NT of 1.9mm.

thanks

Stop googling - you will drive yourself nuts!

You seee=m to be assumimg that it's bad news because she wouldn't discuss it but
look at this way - if your NT is 'good' and she told you that but then your bloods were 'bad' your overall risk could be higher than they might have led you to believe today and so she is absolutely right to wait till they have all the information. These tests only give you a probability of a problem anyway. For most people, most of the time there is absolutely nothing to worry about. Don't torment yourself.

If you are having both bloods and nuchal you do just need to consider both together as it raises the accuracy from around 60% to 90% so she was just doing her job. If its any help with dd1 my nuchal measurement was 3.7mm (off the scale of the chart they give you) but when bloods were combined the overall risk was over 8,000:1. So try not to worry - and not to google!!

ok, I guess that makes sense. am just going to have to put it out of my mind until the results come. worrying isn't going to change anything

Your dh is totally right

Did you get any good pics anyway?

Hi Migola,
Depending upon where you had your blood tests done it may be the unit's policy is that they no longer give you a scan related risk result at that time and instead wait for a more accurate Combined risk results which also incorporates the blood test results. The upper limit of normal for this CRL measurment is approximately 2.5, so you are well within the normal range. I would not worry about what the ultrasonographer said!

I got a really cute pic. DD's pic was really dodgy and it looked like she had a really long nose like a scarecrow (which of course it turned out to be cute as a button), but this one is a good pic & looks like he/she is sucking its thumb!

nina that could well be true. i'm just reading into everything
