Could they really be wrong about the sex of my baby?

I am pregnant with number 4 and found out the sex as my DD who is now 6 has been longing for a sister (she has 2 younger brothers!)and so I just wanted to prepare her incase I was carrying a boy. I was told it was a girl and saw very clearly for myself the 3 white lines. A few friends have now said that I should not take it as a definate. The sonographer really had a good look to make absolutely sure and she certainly had a very good view as I had told her of my situation with my DD! Could it really be anything other than a little girl?! I always assumed that maybe they got it wrong if they didn't get a very clear view but how can 3 white lines be a boy? I decided not to tell DD as I want to keep it a surprise for her but I was pleased to know as the pressure she was putting me under... "you can always swap with someone else in the hospital...!!" I need reassurance please.

They can never be 100% certain but they are usually pretty accurate now

CarGirl · 19/01/2009 18:25

They're probably 95% correct but nothing is definate especially when they think it's a girl (rather than having seen clear boy bits!)

How far along are you?

Do they still look for "three lines" in the UK? "Angle of dangle" is a much more reliable method. Sexes of both of my babies were determined at 12 week scan with this method.

I was nearly 23 weeks when I had the scan and she had a very good look around for a potential willy but saw nothing. My sister said that a boy is pretty obvious as she said it resembled a little turtle...

In our hospital, ultrasound device is hooked to a computer that freezes 3D image, then cuts where doctor wants, and rotates. So you can see anything and everything, regardless of baby's position.

I had 3 white lines at my scan. They said it's a girl and she was!!

yes, they can get it wrong.

HunnyBunnyTigerFeetMummy74 · 20/01/2009 11:16

I got the three lines and had a girl as expected.

I think that they tell you not to take it as read just in case - but (and this is just my opinion, I am not a medic) if the three lines are clear then you will have a little girl.

SheSellsSeashellsByTheSeashore · 20/01/2009 11:23

They are normally right but my cousin who is a midwife say's if they tell you it's a boy, it's definately a boy, if they say it's a girl it could be a boy with it's bits hidden.

They were right for my 2 dd's and my sister's dd.

TigerFeet · 20/01/2009 11:25

I think a lot depends on the view. WIth dd, she had her legs wide open and the three lines were plainly obvious - nowhere for any bits to hide!

With this baby I was told a boy at my NHS scan and then I had a private scan at babybond. The sonographer said 'the NHS is wrong...if that's not a girl I don't know what it is' Both times, though the baby was all curled up and couldn't be seen very well.

I am more inclined to believe the private scan because the sonographer told me if she was scanning herself, she would go out and buy pink. But having been told two things I now have a niggling doubt and don't really feel safe enough to get anything gender specific.

Damn, I don't like cream!

A friend of mine was expecting twins and was told she had one of each. She had 2 girls!
