There used to be a "warning" for pregnant women not to eat peanuts in particular those with a history of allergy as it could result in baby/child having an allergy to nuts and also not to give nuts to young children. But I think they are reviewing at the advice in the UK as in other parts of the world, pregnant women eat nuts/peanuts during pregnancy and give them to their children and they have much lower incidences of allergy than we do. I eat a miniature bag of mixed nuts/fruit most days and don't give it a thought. Cx

I've heard the same as Carrie, think they are now re-evaluating this advice as they are thinking it's the reason why there is a high percentage of children with nut allergies, but could be wrong

If either of you or your families have a history of nut allergy then don't touch them if not was told by my GP that will be OK.

Nuts are very very good for you. If you or your family don't have allergies to nuts then eat them to your heart's content

iwantitnow · 17/01/2009 22:49

They don't know for sure either way - just eat nuts if you feel like it.

Just wanted to add that in 1998 when preg with dd1 (before this advice came out) I had a 6 month craving for salt n vinegar peanuts. I ate at least 2 packets a day AND come from a very allergy prone family.

She is 10 and has not a single sniffle of an allergy.

My midwife said the latest advice is this. If you come from a family with a history of nut allergies or DH does then don't eat peanuts during pregnancy.
However for the rest of us, the advice is that if you normally eat nuts and then stop, then you might actually be raising the risk for your child. Equally the risk is raised if you don't normally eat them then suddenly start. So basically if you don't have a history of allergies keep to your consumption pattern pre pregnancy.
Hope that doesn't sound too complicated

Yes, I can see how if you have peanut butter cravings this may not be brilliant if it is a change to normal. I don't see the point in cutting them out completely however when that might in fact be worse rather than better.
