What do you bring - is it a gift for the baby or mother or both?

If she's a first time mum.. i'd go with something for the baby. If it's not her first child, chances are she'll have most major supplies and won't need as much as a first timer might, so something to pamper her instead could be quite nice. Most people buy things for the baby, I just think it's a nice idea to spoil the mum before she's knee deep in nappies and pukey babygrows!

I think it depends on the person really as to whether you get something for the mum or the baby, give them whatever you'd think they'd appreciate most.

Somebody got me a sanctuary mum to be kit for christmas it's really lovely (smells great) and is good with my usually sensitive skin - perhaps she'd like something like that?

If you get something for the baby, I'd say clothes in 6 months+ instead of any smaller.

I have started buying new dressing gowns for expectant mothers
you never spend as much time wearing it as you do with a newborn, and even if you have a nice one already it will get sicked down so a spare never hurts

I'm American - traditionally gift givers at baby showers bring something for the baby, not the mom.

katie789 · 16/01/2009 12:43

I'm 37 weeks with first baby; and some American friends threw me a baby shower last month (I think it's a US thing in origin, so they knew how to do it all - I was clueless!)

Presents were all for the baby, or maternity things - e.g. V shaped cushion, sling, baby clothes (mostly newborn size, a couple of things up to 6 months), toys, teddies, blankets, muslin cloths, baby books ('How to be a Yummy Mummy', 'What To Expect in the First Year' and A-Z of child health').

They also bought me a Diaper Cake (made in California) which was quite something to behold... www.lilbabycakes.com/captivating-cake-diaper-cake.html We also played games like 'pin the sperm on the egg', maternity charades, etc etc.

I was living overseas for this (in Africa); wonder if they'll catch on in the UK?

You only bring One gift : for the baby, or maybe something that helps mom manage the baby (like a monitor). It's a bit like a tea+cakes party otherwise.

Thank you for all your replys - I particularly like the idea of the 'sanctuary mum to be kit' where do you get these from?

Oh, bit disappointed you couldn't eat the diaper cake, although with a name like that why would you want too!?!.... darn sweet tooth of mine.

Yes no games etc in the UK.

I went to one recently - for a British mum, but arrnanged by an American friend. We had lots of games - "Guess Mummy's girth", Who is Who of old baby photos, a pinata in the shape of a pram. We also made pledges of what we could do for the mum once the babies (twins) were born, and had a collection for the local neonatal unit. And lots of food.

I bought one present, for the babies.

Have subsequently fulfilled my pledge of adult conversation and cake!
