36 weeks, head down, cord round neck - any idea what this really means for the baby?

Had a scan on Monday - turns out my baby is head down, and has the cord round his neck. The Dr said not to worry too much, but if he is still in the same position when I have my next scan in 2 weeks time they want to perform a CS. If the cord has slipped off from round the neck, they are going to induce me early anyway as they are concerned the baby is already quite large (3.3kg estimated - although isn't it ridiculously difficult to estimate birth weight?).

Has anyone experienced this? I read a statistic somewhere that 1 in 3 babies are born naturally with the cord around their neck. Should I be worried?

MY DS2 was born naturally with the cord round his neck, although we didn't know it was until he appeared. He was a funny colour but fine.

I have no experience of this but I would feel reassured they have found it and are aware of it x good luck

lots of babies born with the cord around their neck and all is well...

how much is 3.3 kg in pounds? does not sound enormous to me

and there is a margin for error in scans

My DD was born with the cord around her neck AND it had a knot in it. It explained why her heartbeat lowered every time I had a contraction Anyway the midwife was great and guided me through the pushing brilliantly and managed to slip the cord free straight away. She was alarmingly purple when she was born but gained normal colour almost instantly (DD not the midwife . She was absolutly fine.

3.3kg is about 7lb 4oz i think. Seeline, can you send your midwife to me??? I have a gyno, no midwife, seemingly desperate to perform a CS.
But having spent the last 2 hours reading stories about inductions and giant babies on MN, maybe that wouldn't be too bad.....

Scans are out by an average of 0.5kg - how long have you got left, if only a couple of weeks then latest scan not a large weight.

Ds had the cord wrapped around his neck twice, was 10lb 1oz at birth and head circumference was on the 100th centile. He was born vaginally with the help of ventouse (and I had meconium in my waters when they broke) and he was fine within seconds, hollering like nobadies business (I however took considerably longer to recover )

ds2 was born with the cord around his neck. It was really tight so the cut his cord as soon as his head came out. He was stressing in labor, and that was probably why. He was totally fine afterwards, they just took him to the side first to check him over before handing him over to us.

As for scans I never believe what they say regarding to weight. They were of by 1.5 pounds and 3 pounds for ds1 and ds2 respectively.

my dd was born with the cord twice round her neck. She was fine - birth was easy and she had no problems with breathing etc...

Thank you everyone, this is reassuring.
iwantitnow - I am due on 14th Feb
