How long were you in the hospital after giving birth?

Our local hospital is Kings in South London - I've been given a sheet that says if no complications I'm expected to leave the hospital within 4 hours of my baby's birth. I knew it was coming, but now I'm just wondering - how many people are really in and out in 4 hours?

How long did you stay in the hospital after giving birth?

6 days.

baby had jaundice, then tests for infections so we had to wait for results. Also I kept collapsing from low iron.

Don't let them rush you out - there are lots of benefits to staying in hospital for a while.

2 days with first baby. Had a pph and blood transfusion and GBS in me was confirmed so they needed to check DS was all right.

24 hours with DD but I could have gone home the same day (she was born at 1:30). I wanted to have a night in hospital with just my little girl .

SIL had first baby at about 2pm and left hospital at about 8pm that day.

dd1 transfer from homebirth, several epidurals, spinal, ventouse, out in just over 24 hours.

dd2 transfer from homebirth, epidural, stitches, out within 6 hours. it was lovely cos we stayed in delivery room, never transfered to the ward so i had blissful peace and quiet til it was time to go

DD - CS @ 33/40 - 11 days (then stayed in NNU until she came home)

DS - elective CS @38/40 - 48 hrs

First birth 3days.

Subsequent births some time after 2pm (earliest that I could get my discharge notes) following the birth.

So, baby born in the morning, home same day.
Baby born in afternoon, home after 2pm next day.

In theory, if no complications, discharge was 6hrs after birth.

JulesJules · 15/01/2009 09:15

First baby - 3 days
2nd baby, CSection - 3 days

Lulumama · 15/01/2009 09:17

DS, em c.s at 8pm on friday, home tuesday lunchtime

DD, VBAC at 1am on friday, home 4pm the same day, would have been sooner, but no-one to discharge me

CantSleepWontSleep · 15/01/2009 09:21

First baby 24 hrs exactly as had meconium in waters.

Second baby 25 hours - 24 due to gestational diabetes, and an extra 1 because I wanted my lunch before I left.

MadreInglese · 15/01/2009 09:22

A week

(but it was a GP unit and my horror MIL - now exMIL - had moved herself into my house so I wasn't budging until she was packed and ready to go)

CharCharGabor · 15/01/2009 09:23

I stayed in with DD for 4 days as I struggled to latch her on myself so refused to leave. The head midwife wasn't pleased but she didn't have a choice. 4 hours sounds a bit harsh.

FAQtothefuture · 15/01/2009 09:24

DS1 - 3 days - had a CS though
DS2 - had him at lunchtime went home the following morning (wanted to go home that night but was persauded it wasn't a good idea when I tried to stand up in the evening and collapsed in a heap on the floor
DS3 - Had him at 4.17, placenta delivered at 5pm I left at 9

pecanpie · 15/01/2009 18:48

dd born at 6.45am. I ideally wanted to go home after 6 hours (minimum hospital allowed) but had to stay in overnight...

eekareindeer · 15/01/2009 18:55

Good grief OP!

I was in Kings 5 days after dd birth (crash c/s and dd needing a bit of special care)

4 days after ds (elective c/s)

Am staggered at 4 hours.

I would have thought 12 at the minimum, for anyone?

I know a lot of people want to get home as soon as they can after a straightforward delivery but 4 hours???

FAQtothefuture · 15/01/2009 18:57

eek - I would have been out earlier had I not had to wait for shift change over (as it was I left 4hrs after delivering the placenta)

WorzselMummage · 15/01/2009 18:59

dd 7 days, uncomplicted vaginal birth but she was prem.

ds 3 days, em cs another prem, i could have stayed longer if i wanted to but needed a good feed..

4 hours is shocking really

FAQtothefuture · 15/01/2009 19:02

I wanted to leave the day after my CS - but they wouldn't let me, probably something to do with the fact I still couldn't get in and out of bed properly (not helped I hasted to add by them not realising I'm a bloody short arse and the bed was up really high )

ohdearwhatamess · 15/01/2009 19:09

Ds1 - a week. He was ill in SCBU with chicken pox, and I had a fever.

Ds2 - 20 hours. Planned on leaving after 6, but he was born too late in the day. Next day lots of sitting around waiting for the paed doctor to discharge us, for discharge paperwork, and for hearing tests to be done.

scorpio1 · 15/01/2009 19:10

ds1 - 2 nights - i was 17 and very scared of the baby, lol.

ds2 - 5 hours.

dd - home birth

scorpio1 · 15/01/2009 19:10

all VB

Lulumama · 15/01/2009 19:12

i think 6 hours should be a minimum in hospital to make sure all is well, everything doing as it should and no massive bleeding.

but if oyu hve a HB, v v unlikely MW stays for 6 hours so.....

i think in the reality of the NHS , a 4 hour discharge is a bit of a hopeful over optimistic aim
