My baby will be ok won't he?
I have to got to DAU tomorrow morning, but they've told me to call an ambulance if I go into labour because I'll need anti-biotics on a drip through labour.
I've known a baby to die due to this infection, but mine's pretty much full term so he'll be ok?

I don't think it's that they want to, rather that they want to be seen to be doing something iyswim. I've had a UTI since July that has not been successfully treated at any time from gp or hospital, the care this time has also been very inconsistant with major communication issues between care team, I also had a horrible time at this hospital when having ds, and everytime something else hapens, I have a mini break down and can't stop crying so think they just want to be seen to be trying to help and understand iyswim.

Hi LBB

It was picked up that I had GBS when I had a swab with a m/c that I had inbetween having DS1 and DS2, so I probably had it with DS1 but didn't have any anti-biotics and he is fine.

When in labour with DS2 I got to hospital at 10.00pm, had the ab's pretty soon but he was born at 11.59 so didn't have them in me for long enough but they just gave him ab's for 48 hours and his blood cultures came back negative. He was fine.

My notes had stickers in also, but I mentioned it as soon as we arrived as it wasn't the hospital I was booked in at (they were closed because it was full) and didn't want them to miss it.

I am sure everything will be fine, but it is a big worry I know - just another little stress to add.

littleboyblue · 15/01/2009 22:14

Thanx beaner. I'm thinking maybe I also had it with ds. I was tested but he was born before I gotr results and then I didn't think about it.
It's very reassuring to hear all of these stories of people having it and babies being fine. With every reply I get, I get a little calmer about the whole thing. I'm now just a bit worried about not recognising labour early enough (yes I am that stupid) or waters going without me realising like last time, but as you say, they'll treat baby after delivery and as we are full term hopefully he'll be strong enough to fight anything.

Just wanted to say I am sure your baby will be fine - as you have tested positive and the hospital are aware of this this is a good thing - it would be worse if you had it and no one knew which is what happened in my case. If you are getting the antibiotics then that is a good thing. I am sure they will keep a close eye on your baby after he/she is born. Good luck hun! xxxx

littleboyblue · 15/01/2009 23:13

Thank you.
Was your baby ok?

beautifulday Just had a peek at your profile which linked me to another GBS thread you posted on and I read about your ds. How awful, must have been the scariest of times.
Pleased he pulled through it. X

I had this, had a normal vaginal birth and baby was fine. If you tell the hospital they'll give you antibiotics during labour to counteract the Group B Strep. Just be careful they put the needle anywhere but your wrist (you'll have to be forceful about this) as you won't be able to lean on your wrist once it's in - the pain is awful.

Best of luck!

littleboyblue · 15/01/2009 23:35

Thanx Groucho. I will make sure I kick up a stink about the position, I remember trying to hold ds with the saline drip last time and couldn't get comfy as could feel it in my hand everytime I moved

Hope your birth goes smoothly.

DragonLowFatSpread · 15/01/2009 23:38

I didn't know I had GBS.
I also didn't know my waters had broken more than 48 before DS1 was born.
He was born very very ill and we very nearly lost him.
The statistics mean very little if your child just happens to be the 1 in 1000.
You are lucky because you know you are a carrier so you will be offered the right treatment.
Just get thee to hospital at the first signs of labour and get the antibiotics and you shouldn't need to worry.
Good luck.

littleboyblue · 15/01/2009 23:39

Me too! But not that lucky
Last time it was days of early labour with bak pains, 3 hours of pushing, only 20 second contractions which stayed in back, 2nd degree tear and big cut to make room for the forceps. Why do we do it again? Lol

Thanx Dragon. So sorry you had that scare, glad he pulled through. x
Part of me wants to pack all my stuff and live at the hospital now until birth. I am so paranoid about any little twinge/pain I get

OP posts:
DragonLowFatSpread · 15/01/2009 23:49

Yeah, he pulled through eventually but he had a lot of feeding/weight gain difficulties initially due to being tube fed, and he had lots of breathing problems in his first year as a result of the GBS pneumonia.
He's now 4 and fine.

I think i bear the scars still though.
It really doesn't help me to be told how very unlucky we were as the statistics should've been in our favour.
Left me with a 'why me?' feeling and i think the PND kicked off right there.

FWIW, even after the first experience i was still willing to give it a go the second time and trust that i could get to the hospital in time, so i understand the paranoia of waiting for labour, but you really don't need to camp out at the hospital.

littleboyblue · 15/01/2009 23:57

I know, it's hard though isn't it?
I kind of feel really guilty that we have decided to beome parents and have accepted that we will be responsible for the safety of our children and I'm already failing for this little one, it's silly to think like that though isn't it? I mean it's not my fault that I am carrying this infection, it's just hard to accept that if anything happens to him it's because of something he picked up from me so can definately understand the emotional scars still being present, but could be a hell of a lot worse I suppose.
Glad you got through it.

DragonLowFatSpread · 15/01/2009 23:59

yes, i still struggle with the feeling that my body nearly killed him.
(on the dark days only )

like i said, you are lucky to have found out. so i'm sure you'll be fine.

littleboyblue · 16/01/2009 00:04

Yes, agree we are very lucky to have found out when you look at the possibilities of not knowing. Thanx for your honesty and for sharing your experience.

For all that have given their upport here over the past few days whilst I've been in a bit of a state (bloody hormones).
I just thought I'd let you know I am feeling alot better and a lot more relaxed after receiving a call this afternoon from the mw team leader, she has reassured me that all will be fine, there is no need to overly rush when labour starts, that I should have enough time to calmly sort ds out and have something to eat and if baby born too quick, it is easy enough to treat him (obviously I would ratrher have the treatment than him directly) and that he will be very closely monitored, and we are still relatively low risk.

DragonLowFatSpread · 16/01/2009 18:22

very good.

LBB
Glad you are feeling more relaxed. That was nice of the midwife to call you, I bet that has made a big difference to you. I had a lovely midwife who delivered DS2, made the whole thing a lot more relaxed for me.

Hope the relaxed vibe continues.
