hey i am 13 weeks pregnant with my third baby, and suffering terribly with these awful bugs that keep circling.
this is the third time ive got it now, paracemtomol (sp?) is doing nothing.
in desperation (as i have 2 children to look after aged 1&2) i had a lemsip this morning.
now feeling quilty, cos it says to 'check with your doctor' and i didnt

does anyone know if it is safe or not?

my poor baby

Natty I'm sure 1 lemsip wont be too bad, but any pharmacist I have spoken to (as I've been loaded with the flu for weeks) have advised that I cannot take anything other than paracetamol.

Like I said there will be no harm done to your baby after 1 lemsip if you are worried please call your midwife

MrsBadger · 12/01/2009 11:52

the decongestant in it isn;t a good idea and apart from that it's only paracetamol
but the baby will be fine

hot squash or honey and lemon a better plan

chin up

NattyPlus2andAHalf · 12/01/2009 12:05

thanks guys.
does anyone know what the decongestant does to the baby? cos that seems to be the only thing clearing my head atm, i am really finding it hard to function, and kids are getting shouted at for just being noisy.

the decongestant in Lemsip works by restricting the flow in blood vessels, which means your nose runs less

but obv restricting blood flow to the baby is a bad thing

see your GP - there may be something that will help that's safe in pg

There was a thread on this a few weeks ago and I think the op ended up speaking to her either her midwife or GP who said it would be fine. I always thought decongestants were a no no in pregnancy which is why it sticks in my mind.

Might be worth doing a quick thread search. Hope you feel better soon

NattyPlus2andAHalf · 12/01/2009 12:10

ok thanks
will try to do that, unfortuatly my gp in 8 miles away being as we have just moved...
DH is home in the morning tomorrow so might leave the kids and go register.

this is the only bit i hate about pregnancy. for some reason i only seem to get these awful bugs when im pregnant

Natty like MrsBadger says it slows down the blood flow to the baby. I have been advised to put my head over a bowl of hot water and let the steam from that help clear my head, not tried it yet so not sure how well it works.

NattyPlus2andAHalf · 12/01/2009 12:11

MD, thanks! i will do that

does vick count as well then?
that was my craving with my daughter, the smell of it, i had a pot firmly wedged under my nose all the time

Nattyplus .... I have checked with my consultant (who is very very highly rated ....) and he told me that lemsips are fine (as are expectorant cough medicines). So I have taken the odd lemsip, when desparate. So DO NOT WORRY.
I, like you, have picked up every bug going whilst pregnant (am now nearly 30 weeks) - total nightmare....
xx

boots do their own version of something similar, boots cold and flu relief, altho doesn't have decongestant its pretty good but i wouldn't worry too much about what you've already taken

MrsBadger · 12/01/2009 12:35

the boots one is just paracetamol and vit c

def worth a try

NattyPlus2andAHalf · 12/01/2009 12:47

Madigan thank you
i will check with my doctor when i get the chance, but like u said i was desperate.
sorry you've been as poorly as me, it sucks doesnt it?

Ive had a really bad case of very painful blocked sinuses for the last couple of weeks and found that breathing in the fumes whilst head covered with a towel from a few drops of eucolyptus oil in a bowl of steaming water really helped. This and paracetamol for the fever worked wonders

Theochris · 12/01/2009 13:28

Hiya, generally should only take paracetamol, but a friend of mine had a Lemsip when she was really poorly on her midwifes advice. I prob wouldn't have another mind.

Hope you feel better soon

brettgirl2 · 12/01/2009 18:14

Drink hot fresh honey and lemon. It tastes pretty foul but it works as well as decongestant anyway.

NHS Direct will be able to tell you.
