Hello

Just thought i would post a message in case there are any midwives or anyone with any helpfull advice please.
I am 28 weeks pregnant with my 2nd child, & untill last monday had an extreemly livley baby..kicked non stop.. however since last monday it barely kicks?? I was out bending & twisting making a snowman with my son & since then there has been a dramatic decrease in both movements & the power of the movements.
I went to Fetal assesment on Thursday & went on the CTG & it was normal, they req I go back Fri, again the CTG was normal, but baby had only done a couple of small movements all day & so they sent me in for a scan.. I had a rather rushed scan because they had pushed me in, however, growth was normal & they said although it didnt look as if baby was moving on the scan & was lazy, it had done several tiny movements that the sonographer saw... so all looked normal.
they sent me home saying to continue with my kick chart & if things continue as they are to go back... well... all weekend, things have not improved, if anything ...the baby moving even less.. I dont want to make a fuss..& because the scan looked ok I am wondering if I should just forget it & accept that shes moving less & thats it??
Or could it still be a sign that somthing is not right (despite the scan looking normal?)can the scan be ok for example but maybe baby not getting what she should be through the cord & so no energy to move as much?
(my scan had a request on it from the midwife to do a DOPPLER... this was not done for some reason (rushing!)?? isent this what checks that the plancenter is working properly?)
Any help would be greatly appreciated as im starting to really feel down about this.

Thank u

Joanne

if you are worried - I would go back in. Don't worry about looking anxious - isn't everyone anxious during pregnancy?? It's not really the number of movements that I think you need to be concerned about, in that if she had always been like this i would be inclined to say it might be her position, but the fact the movements has changed has obviously worried you - i would go back in and request a repeat scan and demand they do the doppler. Hope all is well.

jkb · 11/01/2009 18:50

thank u babybaby123.. is the doppler improtant then? what exactly does that show?

Doppler looks at the blood flow through the cord. It should be done, yes. They will probably want to repeat regularly for as long as the baby's movement is giving concern. Do stay on top of this; you need to. Good luck.

They said to go back if things continue, so you must go back. With ds1 I spent many times on assessment unit as the little monkey would have quiet spells but everything was fine and I wouldnt change a thing. It is always better to be safe than sorry. Get it checked out again and put your mind at rest

jkb · 11/01/2009 18:56

so just because the scan was normal.. it dosent mean thats things are definetly ok??.. my hubby keeps saying that i habe had a scan, it was all ok & to just stop worrying? as things must be 100% ok cos they let me home & the scan was ok???

Firstly I think there may be a little bit of confusion about CTG and Doppler - they both do the same thing - measure the baby's heartbeat - so perhaps the midwife wrote Doppler meaning CTG? A CTG is just a more sophisticated Doppler. I'm sure someone will correct me on this if I'm wrong.

If the baby was suffering from the placenta not working properly the heartbeat would probably reflect this. It might be that the baby is a little bigger now and has less room to move and is curled up so you can''t feel much. Also there can be lots of smaller movements that you can't feel but these are picked up by the CTG. However if you are worried you should go back. That is what they are there for.

Ring the maternity unit and tell them you are still very worried about lack of movements - if you have another scan and everything is fine then no harm done.

im not sure they would do another scan would they ?? if I only had one on friday? would they think i were mad!?

WorzselMummage · 11/01/2009 19:25

I had to have doppler scans and they check the floor is flowing though the cord correctly and that the placenta is working, i think they can check the oxygenation of the blood though i may be wrong.

WorzselMummage · 11/01/2009 19:26

blimy... BLOOD not FLOOR.
My fingers type a lot of complete crap..

please dont sit at home and think I dont want to bother them again..

mothers intuition is very rarely wrong

a doppler will let you hear the baby's heartbeat and I dont mean to spook you but hearing the heartbeat (even if its normal) just means the baby is fine at that moment in time .. its not an indication that baby will continue to thrive

If a scan is done properly the doctor/midwife can see if the baby's growth is normal, if the blood is flowing through the cord, if baby is moving and of course will show the heartbeat as well. Growth and blood flow to baby are much better indicators that your baby will continue to thrive

your local hospital wont think you are mad if you go back in. I dont know if they will do a scan again so soon.... but certainly they should be able to share the growth chart and the blood flow results with you.

If they dont have this info insist they get it by doing another scan

good luck .. please let us know how you get on

I would definitely go back in, don't sit and worry. It isn't worth risking anything to be honest, better to be on the safe side.

jkb · 11/01/2009 19:32

i think you are right, ijust looked it up on the net, they check bloodflow to the baby & make sure the cord is working ok.. i wonder why she didnt bother doing that then? maybe cos the baby was right size for dates she didnt bother?? but if baby only had somthing go wrong for the past 5 days (eg: a small tear in the cord or somthing) then she would show normal for dates wouldnt she?? as she would have been growing well up untill that point?

You should definitely give the delivery suite a call. Reduced fetal movements are often a reflection of the baby in a rest/sleeping phase but can occasionally represent a baby that is not coping well inside the uterus and keeping still to save energy. All maternity units should encourage you the same day if you feel there has been a distinct reduction in movements. The doppler scan is usually done if the growth scan is abnormal. A CTG gives you more immediate information as to the baby's condition where as the doppler gives an indication of more long term compromise. No maternity unit will mind you giving them a call if you are worried and they would prefer you to go in for a fetal heart recording in case of problems and to avoid you sitting at home and stressing! Don't feel guilty about it just give your delivery suite a phone call and go in!

jkb · 11/01/2009 19:40

i would love to do it tonight, but my son is in bed fast asleep & im the only one here with him... afraid i will have to wait till tommorow... I have just felt her move... but only a small amount & very slight...im happy she has moved..but still concerned why not much

OP posts:
theowlwhowasafraidofthedark · 11/01/2009 19:41

Just to let you know a similar thing happened to me. Baby had just moved position and was kicking the placenta so I couldn't feel it. Baby was fine.
Definitely go back in for reassurance though.

jkb · 11/01/2009 19:45

they did say she was breach facing sideways in the scan..but surely she wouldnt stay in the exact position for a week would she?

NINA 99 - i really do get the feeling that what you suggest can happen may be right, i feel she is moving, but not much..conserving energy.. r u a midwife?? x

I agree with what others have said, call them even if you feel you can't go in. That's what they're there for and they told you to get back to them if things continued, which they have. Don't feel bad about making a fuss, you've every right to help if there's a problem and reassurance if there's not.

JodieO · 11/01/2009 20:00

At 28 weeks (for me anyway) I could feel movements no matter what position they were in, I have 3 dc's and it's been the same with them all. I've had difficult pregnancies so I always trust my instincts and know that it is better to go in and be checked out than just leaving it.

frasersmummy · 11/01/2009 20:12

i agree with nina99 that lack of movement can be a baby that is not coping well.. but like she says it can be lots of other things

make sure when they do a growth scan the get a measurement round baby's tummy. If the placenta is not working properly .. baby can grow to right dimenions but be very weak due to not putting on weight..

if baby has just moved then she is ok at the mo... easier said than dont but relax and try and get a good nights sleep and call them in the morning

jkb · 11/01/2009 21:46

thank u everyone... i just hope this little lady starts to liven up soon x

How are things today?

jkb · 12/01/2009 20:06

a little better i think thank u .. I didnt go to the hospital today as i felt a couple of moves & then i felt a really big grinding move earlier, like she did a big change of position or somthing..my belly was wobbling??
so maybe that will make things better!?
x
