Too Much Ammniotic Fluid/Big Baby?

JennyfromtheBlock · 07/01/2009 18:44

Just had a scan today at 28 weeks to check the babies heart, this was fine. However it showed i had to much fluid and baby was big. I'm measuring 31 weeks.
I'm booked in for GTT on Tuesday, but have no sugar in urine.
sorry this is quite rambling but i'm kinda thrown by all this.
Can anyone share any experience or reassure me.
This poor little babe seems damned from the off, i just get passed one hurdle and another one appears

I've never been told that I've had too much fluid, but at 32 weeks I was measuring 36, had a scan to check size and was told baby is average. Not really sure how they work all this stuff out tbh, seems a bit hit and miss. I wouldn't worry though, if there was anything to be overly concerned about, you'd know about it.

Sorry no experience of increased fluid but didnt want to leave you unanswered. I did measure 2cms bigger though and was always convinced they got my dates wrong. DD was born 2 weeks early (induced) and weighed 71b 14oz so she would of been quite big full term. Did they give you any idea why there was too much fluid?

llareggub · 07/01/2009 18:55

I have gestational diabetes and never have sugar in my urine.

I was tested early for GD because DS1 was born at 37 weeks weighing 8 pounds 12 and I had lots of amniotic fluid. He was also very jaundiced.

This time, with GD, I am injecting insulin and restricting my diet. This should result in a smaller baby. I see a specialist midwife, nurse and have a joint consultant clinic with a diabetes specialist and an obstetrician.

Don't panic!

Have had experience of increased fluid[polyhydramnious]May be a chance you go into labour sooner, which is why it is good they have spotted it.
With 2nd child told he would be big and had big head!He weighed 9lb 10 oz...But then I weighrd 2lbs more at birth.Did not have too much fluid then.
Try not to worry, the main thing is they are monitoring you and baby

JennyfromtheBlock · 07/01/2009 18:56

They said they will check for diabetes first. Seeing consultant again at beginning of February so doubt i'll no much til then. I'm confused about diabetes thing tho cos i would have thought it'd be showing in my urine?

Oh, and if you have GD the it should go away after your pregnancy.

AFAIK, the things you describe are indicative of GD but not in all cases.

Doobydoo · 07/01/2009 18:58

Oh,and I didn't have diabetes.

JennyfromtheBlock · 07/01/2009 18:58

Thanks for the replies you'd think i'd chill it bit with it bein my fourth pregnancy

I don't have anything in my urine glucose-wise. The GTT is a better test for GD. You'll know straight away from the GTT as it is just a case of testing blood sugar. Take a book, it takes ages.

theboob · 07/01/2009 19:00

i had this with DS2 they did a GTT and that was negative,i was scanned every week and induced at 38 weeks because of size he was born fine and 8lb 3oz ,when they broke my waters there was so much it soacked through the midwifes shoes

Doobydoo · 07/01/2009 19:01

I was on the loo...I could have surfed out

theboob · 07/01/2009 19:01

soaked

llareggub · 07/01/2009 19:02

My waters just kept coming and coming! I was induced at 37 weeks due to his heart beating too quickly. I had lots of scans that never picked up on the fact he was big for dates. They do often get it wrong.

jennylindinha · 07/01/2009 19:09

I wouldn't worry too much at this stage. I had to have extra scans due to potential anitbody problems and every time I went they said that there was no problem with that, but there was possibly a problem with X [insert yet another previously unconsidered condition here], leading to more scans, so I can sympathise...

I was advised that I had extra fluid around the same time as you, but later on it settled down. No sugar in urine either and by the time I got to 40+3 they told me I was only measuring 37 weeks (a bit late to be worrying methinks!) All fine, had my DD at 41+1 and she was 7lbs 1oz - perfect!

Hopefully your GTT will be negative and next time you have a scan then the fluid will have settled down and the baby won't be seemingly too big. Extra scans/tests are irritating when you feel that everything is fine but I suppose that at least you are getting extra attention so if something isn't going well, it will be dealt with quickly.

Best of luck with the rest of your pregnancy .

Portofino · 07/01/2009 19:22

I had too much fluid too and at a scan at 39 weeks they estimated a birth weight of 9 ibs +/- 25%. I was too scared to even work out the + sum! Dd was 8lbs2oz in the end. The extra fluid led to baby bobbing about in there though and i had to be admitted at 37 weeks as she was transverse, and meant that going into spontaneous labour could have been dangerous.

AzureBlueSky · 07/01/2009 19:25

I had loads of amniotic fluid due to gestational diabetes..midwife told me the average was 3cm and I had 10!! DS was 10lb 4oz. My GD wasn't diagnosed till I was 34 weeks...which was why DS was so big.

llareggub · 07/01/2009 19:28

I must say that when I was first referred for the GTT I really worried about it, and when I was first diagnosed I was really upset about it. But I've had excellent care from the NHS and it is much better to know about a situation than not.

goingtohaveagoodnightssleep · 07/01/2009 19:33

At 36 37 weeks I measured about 42 weeks. A scan showed a big baby and excess fluid. I had a GGT a few hours before having DS and it was normal. He was 9 days early and weighed 9lbs 9oz, I could also tell there was alot of fluid when my waters broke and everytime I pushed more and more gushed out!

muppetgirl · 07/01/2009 19:37

I measured big for dates from 20 weeks and therefore I had growth scans every 4 weeks. I had a gtt but it was fine. My waters were measured as being a lot (can't remember technical term sorry!) but as they thought it was a big baby they were fine with excess water as a larger baby would/could need more fluid. As it turned out at 36 weeks I was measuring 40 + (was over 40 as I nearly had a heartattack!) I did have a big baby -ds 2 was 1/2oz off 10lb so yes, they can be wrong but they can also be right! Ds 2 is now a very healthy 14 month old who is still a large boy but a very happy chappy!

Pinkbump3 · 07/01/2009 19:55

With my dd1 i was told i had a lot of amnio fluid also,i was measuring 4 weeks ahead when dd was born she weighed 9lbs 13oz and there was a lot of water and placenta was huge apperently (i wouldnt know) as well.

I never was tested, but because of that im having a gtt this time at 28 weeks which is in 2 and 1/2 weeks time.
