Caffeine - how much are you having?

I think I might have been having too much some days. I've pretty much gone off coffee but I love Earl Grey and although I do have decaf occasionally, I don't like it as much. I sometimes have 4 or 5 big cups a day, and I just read that you should only have 2 mugs or 4 cups. However I also read if you only steep the teabag for a minute, the caffeine will be a lot less than if you do it for 5, and I only do it for about a minute anyway.

I guess I just need to watch my intake, and have decaf more often. x

I'm not having any, but mainly because I don't want any hot drink. I'm going to wait until 2nd trimester then have one a day.

MoominMoma · 06/01/2009 17:37

I stopped drinking coffee when I was pregnant last time and went decaf. I never went back to it and if I have caffeine now it gives me a headache and palpitations.
My friend allowed herself one coffee a day and she was fine.

smallorange · 06/01/2009 17:39

coffee and chocolate are the only things that keep me going TBH

SheWillBeLoved · 06/01/2009 18:05

Some days i'll have 4-5 cups of tea, some days i'll have 1-2. I'm concious of not drinking too much, but i'm also not going to deprive myself of something I want, especially not a cup of tea! I think sometimes we can be too cautious. Not going to worry unless I get a craving for coffee beans/granules.

ladylush · 06/01/2009 18:09

Watch fizzy drinks too - coke etc. Diet coke, pepsi max have more caffeine than tea.

LoveActually · 06/01/2009 18:24

Know what SheWill means I had about three cups of tea a day, got me through the worst of the MS. Went off coffee though.
Went decaf with tea at six months because I got indigestion. Now though (39 weeks) am back on the tea, but coffee ould probably send me nuts. x

They've changed the guidance on this haven't they? I think it's just a common sense one, just don't have too much and if you need to then switch to decaff.

Poppet45 · 06/01/2009 22:46

Yeah they've halved it from the old recommendations. My midwife said 2-3 cups of tea a day, apparently caffeine constricts the blood vessels diverting nutrients and oxygen away from Jnr... so another thing on the naughty list.

I'm really not into tea or coffee at the moment, but really wish I was into tea iyswim I miss enjoying it.

I've read that you can have up to 3 mugs (300 mg) of instant coffee. That was the only thing that kept me going in early and mid PG.Def had 3 cups of instant coffee and some coke on top. Otherwise would have fallen asleep straight up. Then around 7th month went onto decaf tea, cant take decaf coffee ( sounds completely useless to me!) and now at 34+5 I am back to occasional cup of instant coffee a day, or hot chocolate for that matter . And some tea (not decaf) now and again....I do not think it is that bad unless you really coffee addict. Women in France apprently drink coffee like water and they and their babies are fine... but then again, they ( or so I was told) eat blue cheese as well

Okay here's a weird one. At the end of my booking session I swear my midwife said 'and avoid all forms of mint' and my partner thinks she said that too.
Now I have a healthy ready meal with lots of mint in it in the fridge for tomorrow which I stupidly bought with my 'babybrain' on.
Is it a good idea? Can't find anything anywhere about mint not being safe, am starting to wonder if my again 'babybrain' started losing it at the end of the long stream of info in the booking session. Has anyone heard anything similar?!

ranirani · 06/01/2009 23:11

nope, nothing about mint. to be honest my MF did not tell me anything

Poppet45 · 06/01/2009 23:16

I thought I was going mad... I'll probably pour it down my gullet tomorrow then unless there's a flurry of 'don't do it' type posts.

No pressure, ladies

BONKERZ · 06/01/2009 23:18

when i was pregnant with DD 3 years ago Coke was the only thing that stopped my morning sickness and my heartburn and acid reflux! I would drink 2 litres a day and am now addicted and get headaches if i dont have any! its horrid, coffee doesnt have the same kick for me unfortunately.

LUCIA22 · 07/01/2009 13:07

I dont like tea but love coffee and crave it. I was off it for the first 3 months due to MS but now limit myself to two cups a day, mainly because I like strong real coffee and cant bear instant. I know that its not good but some days its the only thing that keeps me going. I am not normally keen on coke but have to say that I have craved that recently too, strange!!

HeinzSight · 07/01/2009 13:09

I have one cup of coffee in the morning, but also drink de-caff tea, maybe 2 cups.

Hawkmoth · 07/01/2009 14:21

Can't drink coffee anymore as smell makes me sick, having 2-3 cups of tea a day instead.
