Forewaters breaking?

I'm due today, and had a mini-gush of liquid this morning - I'd estimate about 2 eggcups worth - I caught some on a pad as I was booked into see the midwife today anyway. She said it looked and smelled like amniotic liquor, but when she did an internal exam there's no further sign of leaking.

She's told me not to worry about it, but phone if any more significant leaking happens. (I've had nothing much since, maybe a teaspoon's worth in 5 hours which I don't figure counts as 'significant'.) Could this be/have been forewaters going? Has anybody else had this, and if so, how long did it take before the 'main event' got going?

Thats exactly what happened to me with DD. No labour at all (sorry), but i kept leaking little bits more over the next 24 hrs, so was taken in to be induced, which was fine really.
I think theres a protocol where I live where you start induction within 72 hrs of losing any fluid......

My forewaters went when i was pregnant with my DS,i phoned midwife for advice and was advised to go to hospital to check if it was amniotic fluid,or if i was leaking urine. At hospital they checked and it was my forewaters, they said because of risk of infection they booked me into the ward for 8.30am the next day to get induced (i was 39 weeks). Was 1cm dilated when i got to hosp the next day and hooked up to drip to induce me,midwife broke my main waters when i was 6cm dilated.

your forewaters are your main waters, you may have had a leak from higher up, the hindwaters, which can reseal and replenish and is different to your waters breaking, that would usually be a big non mistakeable gush

how many weeks are you

Pinkbump3 · 06/01/2009 15:35

my forewaters went with dd1 at 11am on the sat morning not much just a trickle,mw checked said i was not in labour so went home and i went into labour through the night around 2am and dd1 was born 4.35 on the sunday.

Pinkbump3 · 06/01/2009 15:35

that should be 4.35pm

DorisIsAPinkDragon · 06/01/2009 16:00

My forewaters went with DD1 in slow trickles from about 1600 tbh I thought OMG I have NO pelvic floor left as I was on the loo at the time and stood up but "carried on weeing" only after a few attempts at restanding did I establish it wasn't actually wee I went into labor by about 10pm and delivered dd the next day

Good luck sounds like things might happen soon....

Pinkbump3 · 06/01/2009 16:07

doris thats what happened to me i thought i was peeing myself ran to bathroom and it was still sitting there with it going on 10 min later it dawned on me it was my waters!

Lulumama · 06/01/2009 16:09

if your forwewaters had ruptured, i think the MW would have been able to tell you they had gone and advised you to come back for induction within 24 hours if not started to labour as new NICE guidelines indicate induction now within 24 hours of water breaking

if it was just a leak, which it sounds like, then the clock is not ticking

mind oyu i had a leak and labour started 24 hours later, it was not my forewaters though

BarrelOfMonkeys · 06/01/2009 16:14

Thanks - guess I just wait and see then! Just been for a walk which seems to have caused a bit more leaking but no contractions or anything other than lots of BH yet. Might give the MW a call in a bit if it turns into a proper trickle...

walking abround can only help get things going.

Lulumama i dont know what the new guidlines are my dd1 is 9 dd2 8 (on 31st jan)

so has been a while since i was last pg (25 weeks pg now)

but i remember she didnt seem too worried about it, but in hindsight i ended up with a severe infection after dd was born and had to go for a d&c 2 weeks after delivery so i dont know if that may have contributed to it.

With DS2 I had a "trickle" from 10pm, through the night, went to hospital at lunchtime the next day - 6cm dilated - mild contractions, then when I got to 9cm after a couple of hours the midwife said she was going to break the "membrane" - then they really did go big style - totally different experience! (he arrived 3 pushes after she'd done it!)

countrylover · 06/01/2009 17:02

I thought my main waters had gone when I had a trickle for around half an hour. When the midwife eventually broke my waters during an examination two days later it was a full on gush of liquid, I was shocked!

From the hind waters going to the main waters going was two days (with contractions every ten minutes constantly, nice) and then another day ontop of full on labour so you could be in for a long wait.

I do hope not, I think my three day labour was unusual. I'm hoping second time round it might be a little quicker!

BarrelOfMonkeys · 07/01/2009 16:31

Thanks everyone. Just to let you know, I ended up popping in for an assessment today after phoning MW to double-check after a bit more leaking last night, but waters are still intact. She said it might have been the hindwaters (lulamama - you're right, got my fore/hinds muddled!) or possibly not, but either way they're not worried and baby seems happy enough in there. Cervix is apparently ripening nicely so hopefully things will start happening soon. I had a tiny bit of show last night and big show about an hour ago so fingers crossed...

countrylover - poor you at three day labour! I go to a yoga class and its a standing joke that everyone who comes back with babies to tell their birth stories seems to have a 3-dayer at the moment, they're all first babies though. Hope your second is a bit speedier!

oooh, you might be on the way if you have a ripening cervix and a show... as i posted, i had my DD 48 hours after a leak

hope you are on the way !
