I'm not on death's door. I'm not suffering dehydration. I feel quite simply awful and have been unable to work. My mum is down as I'm struggling to look after ds now dh is back at work.

Got prescribed something last week which didn't work. Got something different today (cyclizine) which I didn't think was working, til I felt quite a lot better this evening and managed to eat a normal meal.

I've since googled it and found most people advising not to take it unless absolutely necessary, especially in the first trimester.

What should I do? I've no idea how long I'll have this sickness for. If I don't work I don't get paid. I can't ask my mum to come over every week.

WWYD?

Picante, I had the same worry about stemitol - googled and it said on some sights not to use unless absolutely necessary in first tri. I raised it with my consultant, and he said that stemitol, cyclazine etc are considered extremely safe in pregnancy (1st trimester and second - think you have to be a bit careful with stemitol in 3rd), and he has never come across any reported birth defects etc. He said both our meds were given routinely for HG the world over, and that websites such as the ones we've seen just say that because it's unethical to test on pregnant women so they're covering themselves.
I was reassured by this, and am still taking mine on and off at 16 weeks. I would def take - think cyclazine is actually considered 'safer' than stemitol even from what I've read (works in a different way) - enjoy what relief you can get I say!

Picante, please don't worry my friend is a couple of weeks behind me and has taken Cyclizine on and off the whole of her pregnancy with no problems. I've had a peek in the BNF (British National Formulary) Which is what GPs / Hosp Drs use when prescribing drugs. (I'm a nurse and liberated a copy from work )
Basically there is an appendix at the back of the book for drugs and pregnancy / breastfeeding and from what I can see Cyclizine is Ok to take in all trimesters.

Thanks so much. I will take it when necessary and try not to feel guilty!

Hi Picante

I'm 16 wks with no 4 and was prescribed 50mg of Cyclizine 3 times a day at 6 wks. The sickness and nausea continued and didn't seem to be helped by the medication but I was too scared not to take it because I felt so awful, I assumed that I would surely feel worse still without it. I took it religiously until a couple of weeks ago and once my hubby finished work for Xmas, decided I would try and have a go without it as he'd be at home to help out if it was really bad. That first day, the difference in the way I felt was unbelievable. Don't get me wrong, the sickness wasn't any better without it but it wasn't any worse either and I felt SO much more alert and awake and did more housework in the next 2 days than I'd been able to do for the previous 2 months. I quickly realised that the Cyclizine had been totally sedating me and because I was taking it 3 times a day, I was going about permanently zonked. The change was so dramatic that I felt it neccessary to write to my GP. I know it says on the bottle that it may make you drowzy, however my friend who is a nurse has subsequently told me that Cyclizine is used to sedate terminally ill patients! She also advised that although it is a commonly prescribed drug, that may be due to the fact that it is a very cheap alternative to other more effective and as readily available treatments. Sorry, don't want to add further to your concerns, just felt I HAD to tell you about my experience so at the very least you could bear it in mind if you decide to take it yourself. Hope you feel better soon.

Thanks Stiefy. It's done absolutely nothing for me today - I think it was coincidence yesterday, so I'm going to stop taking it.

Bleugh.
