Hiya all...just a wee question looking for advice
Do you think a nursing chair is a good idea? when i asked DH he was for it, but my mum and other relatives think its a waste of money just looking for some mumsnetters opinions.

The one I've been looking at is this chair

Get one, if you can afford it. I didn't, still regretting it now (dd2 is 8 mths). A really comfy chair you can sit in for hours and get out of holding baby easily is brilliant not just for feeding but for sleep-settling if you have a difficult baby.

ilovetochat · 05/01/2009 15:20

i bought one from ikea a poang with a footstool and it was brilliant although they take up loads of space.
i have given it away now as i realise if i have a 2nd child i won't be feeding in the nursery, i will be feeding while monitoring dd.
i did night feeds and morning feeds in the nursery and dd has always loved her room.

NorktasticNinja · 05/01/2009 15:23

I've got the Ikea Poang and its footstool. I used it a lot in the first weeks and have continued to use it for the last year, it's been ideal for me. Actually, it was the only chair I could sit comfortably in whilst I was heavily pregnant.

The fabric covered ones are no good though, whatever you go for make sure you can wipe it down. A lot of milk and vomit gets thrown around in a nursing chair, particularly in those first few weeks...

festivedollyx · 05/01/2009 16:00

i have one and it was a god send i used it every day! using it just now (25weeks pg only place i get comfy!) great for when my dd2 was born she suffered from acid reflux and was great for roking her to sleep after her feed. Great for when baby wouldnt settle as we used to lie back and rock her too sleep in the middle of night really helps when you are sore and dont want to pace around! (bearing in mind mine reclined and rocked) dp loves to use it as well.

this is my one!

festivedollyx · 05/01/2009 16:03

that should be rocking! lol mine is fabric and to be honest havent had any problems with it it also comes off to wash

MrsBadger · 05/01/2009 16:04

never mind the money, think about the space they take up
and most are ugly IMO

I used the sofa for comfy sitting and a gym ball for soothing bouncing, and now if I need to I feed dd in the night I sit on her toybox.

but yes, a comfy place to sit in the baby's room is handy

taliac · 05/01/2009 16:06

We still have our one in the DDs room 2.5 yrs on.

Great for feeding day and night but also midnight cuddles when teething / having nightmares / strops.

Ours was inherited from friends though so free!

BlameItOnTheBogey · 05/01/2009 16:06

They are definitely a luxury but in my opinion this was our best pre baby purchase. I have got so much use out of mine and couldn't have been without it. Also really great for sitting on if you have stitches after birth. Go for it.

AuntyVi · 05/01/2009 16:08

I used our existing Poang chair but had to put cushions in as I found it was too reclined and I got backache otherwise. Later on I gave into temptation and got myself a proper gliding nursing chair and footstool and love it, just wish I had got it earlier! I wouldn't say it is necessary, but if you can afford one it's very nice as a treat and to "reward" yourself for your hard work during those first few months! I didn't check your link, but Kiddicare often has them at good prices, that's where I got mine (am I allowed to say that?). My only regret is not getting one you can lock, as when DS got older I was worried about him getting his fingers caught in the rocking mechanism when crawling around.

festivedollyx · 05/01/2009 16:08

Have to agree if you can afford to get one they are a great purchase, but they do take up a fair bit of space. i have had mine for 7yrs so built to last and still in fab condition!

BarrelOfMonkeys · 05/01/2009 16:27

I've got the same one as Festivedolly - we were in two minds whether to get one or not, but we don't have any chairs with good back support, just sofas really. Having discussed it with friends with babies, they said if you are planning to breastfeed then the main thing is having something comfy where you can sit without getting backache. So, if you have a good office chair or similar, you might want to try that instead for a bit.

Nursing chairs do take up a lot of space, and I can't vouch for how good they are for nursing as my LO is still waiting to make an appearance, but it is v comfy.

nowwearefour · 05/01/2009 16:33

i didnt get one. regretted it whilst bfeeding both dds for 13 months each. but now am v v v v v vpleased i didnt get one. we wouldnt use it now and it would take up a lot of space.

MadameCastafiore · 05/01/2009 16:38

Buy yourself a lot of pillows and a big present for not wasting the money on a uselfess piece of furniture that will be useless in a pretty short time and take up loads of space - think how long that new Mulberry handbag will last!

domesticslattern · 05/01/2009 18:13

I really regret not buying one. I knackered my back completely. Believe me, if you have a soft squashy sofa and you try to sit in it for eight hours PLUS every day and night feeding an angry pissed-off baby, you will not give a toss about handbags.

If you do a search of the threads, someone had a link to a lovely one which doesn't have arms so much smaller and available in lovely colours. Looks like a normal nice chair.

here you go

Haven't used it myself but I would buy one like that if I had my time again.

get one get one get one!!!!

best buy i ever made, got mine from kiddicare with a free footstool and still using it now to do bedtime stories with little one who is 2!! looking forward to using it again in 6 months to bf DC2!

kwaker5 · 06/01/2009 10:07

flynn 1984 - I got the non-deluxe version of the same one about 2.5 years ago. I wouldn't have shelled out 300 quid plus on some of the other ones out there.

Even if you don't really need a special chair, you will welcome somewhere comfy to sit when you are doing night feeds or trying to get your baby settled in the night (or your toddler come to think of it!).

Ours is still in the same spot and DS (now 2.2 has his bedtime story read in it).

Other things are more of a waste of money but not this!

Madigan · 06/01/2009 11:55

I found this absolutely essential. I had a lot of backache etc after DD was born, and my rocking chair was the only comfy place to sit. Still use it all the time now. A really good purchase.

BikeRunSki · 06/01/2009 12:52

I wanted one but was reluctant because of the space things and "what woudl we do with it afterwards?". A friend had one, but in her attic as her DC (toddlers) kept getting their fingers caught in it, but she didn't want to get rid of it. So she lent it to us for however long we need it. It is fantastic. Used to sit in it and rock myslef when pg. Use it now for feeding, soothing, day, night, fab. Get/Beg/Borrow/Steal one if you can.

flynn1984 · 06/01/2009 13:13

I just ordered my chair which I think will be great! I would never have bought an realy expensive one just hope it is comfy I read reviews about the chair and all very positive.
Thanks again for you input

flynn1984- Did you get this chair? Do you find it comfortable? Was thinking of ordering the same for some back support now and hopefully breast-feeding.
