Hello all you wise ones.

I'm 8+3 and went as instructed at 5+0 to see the doc again, but saw a different one. she has booked me an appointment with the midwife for Wednesday, but thinks that it may be too soon and the midwife may not want to see me. At what points do you normally start having someone medical taking an interest?

Since i found out I was pregnant, I've seen the doc once, to be told how things would unfold workwise (our doctors work in the same place we do, for the organisation)and to go away over Christmas and if I hadn't had a miscarriage, to go back and see them after the holidays. I've had a small amount of light brown discharge at 6+4 weeks, but the doc isn't bothered. I do feel tired at times, but not cripplingly so (I'm not boasting those of you feeling like poo), I've been sick once, but that was extreme travel sickness (skidoo expedition) and only vaguely nauseous a couple of other times. I don't have the constant need to pee unless I actually drink the recommended daily amount of water and I'd be peeing that much when not pg. My boobs have done none of the text book stuff. Net result: I feel like I could easily not be pregnant apart from one times missing period. This in turn makes me worried that the feotus has died and I'm just carrying round something waiting to expel itself (yes I know a baby waits to expel itself!!!). I know as I'm typing this that I'm being paranoid, but I could do with some reassurance and advice on when you see midwife/scanner etc and what they actually do. Many thanks x x x xx x x x

Verified, I know how you feel, I have a small amount of nausea, but nothing major, bigger boobs, but no other symptoms, I keep on feeling that I might not be pg anymore too.

I have made an appt to see the MW next week as I could be anywhere between 4 and 10 weeks, she was completely cool with it.

I would call and make an appointment as she will probably have a quick chat on the phone with you first anyway.

HTH

WOOOOO!!!! Bratnav!!! I just knew you were pregnant! Happy New Year- I've been away over Xmas. I had an implantation bleed at the same time you had a wierd 2 day light bleed, remember? So you could be 8 weeks like me. I'm so happy for you. Mwah! big kiss!

Even if you saw the MW tomorrow, she wouldn't be able to tell you whether or not you're carrying a healthy foetus - they don't really start doing abdominal exams and using the doppler to listen for a heartbeat until you're into the 2nd trimester as, until then, the foetus is too small and too low in your pelvis for them to find anything. At this stage in a pregnancy they'd most likely need to use an internal ultrasound to see anything.

Unless you have a history that may effect your pregnancy (miscariage, PCOS, etc) you're unlikely to be offered a scan before about 12 weeks - at that point many PCTs will do a scan to check dates, check number of babies and often look at nuchal transluceny (which can be an indicator of Downs and some other conditions) - the latter is more accurate if combined with a blood test, which many PCTs will also offer.

At some point you need to see the MW for a booking in appointment, which is where they go through your history, outline what their programme of care will be throughout your pregnancy and discuss where you want to give birth. Some PCTs have that appointment as soon as you know you're pregnant, others do it shortly after you've had the 12 weeks scan.

If it's any consolation, my sole pregnancy symptom for the 1st 3 months was being tired - actually seing the baby at the 13 week scan was what made it finally feel real for me.

you can refer yourself to your local EPAU or get a referral letter from your GP for an early scan - sometimes you have to bend the truth a little but if you have had any bleeding and combined with lack of symptoms I understand you wanting a scan. Just ask, you have nothing to lose and as I said, sometimes you can just turn up there and be seen.

My midwife usually won't see people before 10 weeks. I've never been sure about dates, so she has always booked me in for a dating scan.

yay, it is great news isn't it

really, you can't worry about it too much, I'm sure all will be well, but call the MW for an appt, the worst that will happen is that she will book you in for a couple of weeks time

Hi Verified & Bratnav, my mid-wife didn't want to see me at all until 10 weeks so I wouldn't worry too much. I'm 9 + 1 right now - you both must be due in August so feel free to join us in the ante-natal group. Its a great bunch!
