very common for baby to hiccup - thought to be because they swallow amniotic fluid a bit quick!! if the head is down then when the baby hiccups the head will move and you may feel a knock on your pelvis!

dan39 · 05/01/2009 00:14

I am having them every day too - really strange as almost always at 3pm - I can feel them high to middle and had scan last week showing head down...dunno if that means she has moved, or its just some odd echoey thing going on. I am nearly 35 weeks....its nice isn't it?

olivo · 05/01/2009 08:59

my dd had them all the time, especially in the evenings. incidentally, she also had them a lot as a young baby!
i found it really reassuring, if a bit odd

BigTeuchLittleTeuch · 05/01/2009 09:27

I read somewhere that if you eat lots of sweet things, they swallow more amniotic fluid... DS2 was certainly more 'hiccuppy' than DS1 and I ate more chocolate

Anyway, I think it is actually to do with immature nervous system or suchlike. DS2 had them in utero about 10 times a day and still gets them although they are tailing off - perhaps as he is just past his full gestational age (was 3 weeks early).

They can get a bit uncomfortable in the later stages, be warned!

Enjoy the rest of your pregnancy.

Yeah - if you're feeling them low down then head is down - good news, no breech birth!!

My first ds had them all the time but it took me weeks to work out what it was!! This one doesn't have them so much so I am hoping it's because he won't have all the digestive problems ds1 had (colic and reflux).. probably wishful thinking!

dinny · 05/01/2009 11:15

had them loads at this stage with my first pregnancy (dd) and not really very much at all with my second (ds) - am wondering if this means it is a girl...

I'm 35+6 and my LO gets hiccups on a daily basis, pretty much without fail. I had a growth scan last week which showed that he's head down, and I always feel the hiccups right down at the bottom so I'd say it's safe to say that your baby is head down.

I've read that the hiccups are the baby's way of practising use of their diaphragm, even though they're not actually breathing. Mine was 'practising breathing' during the scan last week (you could see his chest and back moving in and out in breathing motions) so I suppose that backs it up?

I've also been told that a baby who hiccups lots in the womb will carry on doing it for a while after they're born. Mine gets them so strongly sometimes during the night that it stops me sleeping!

Picante · 05/01/2009 11:20

I think there's an old wives tale that says if your baby hiccups a lot in the womb then they become very chatty children.

Completely true with ds now 2.8 - I can't shut him up. He also gets hiccups a lot!

dinny · 05/01/2009 11:23

God, the chatty thing is true with dd!

also, she was pretty colicky whereas ds wasn't (uh oh....)

also, dd ws born at 35 weeks, wonder if this one witll stay put till term or be like his/her sister!

Glad to hear that the lack of hiccups/lack of colic correlation happened with your ds dinny - I am hoping against hope we don't have another colicky baby!!

Not sure about it being a girl though as both mine are boys (well unless the sonographer was way wrong...!) and are very different in utero.

Fingers crossed that your baby goes to term! (But not beyond.. )

EachPeachPearMum · 05/01/2009 19:31

Well DD had them all the time in utero.... and had colic, reflux, and gets hiccups really easily now- every time she laughs! (almost 3)

DS (38weeks pg) gets them a lot too .....

dinny · 05/01/2009 19:46

God, colic.....ds didn't have it AT ALL, didn't even need to wind him! though he belches all the time now

dd on the other hand was V V unsettled for a VERY long time!
